A Case of Cathedrals

By Kerry Denten (from Storm-Harvest Ministries)

I was getting ready yesterday to go out to my Grandmother’s 95th birthday
celebrations. While I was in that “autopilot” mode you get into while
showering and dressing, I found my mind wandering to considering some of the
larger organized churches around Australia and other parts of the world and
was surprised by what the Lord showed me.

I was considering Lakewood Church in Houston, Texas when my mind then
meandered from the huge Minster (or Cathedral) in York, England to St
Andrews Cathedral in Sydney. Then my thinking wandered to the Crystal
Cathedral, then to Paradise Community Church in Adelaide, South Australia,
to Christian City Church and Hillsong Church in Sydney .. and here is what
the Lord said …

Five hundred years ago a man named Martin Luther protested against the
injustice of the prosperity of the Roman Catholic Church at the expense of
its adherents. He sounded an alarm over wrong doctrine and ugly practice. He
heralded the need for men and women everywhere to discover that their
salvation did not depend on their commitment to an institutional church but
that they could be saved by grace and justified by faith through their own
relationship with God.

Luther understood that, at the literal end of the day, we would each stand
alone before God to answer for our relationship with Him and NOT our
membership of a church like that of the Roman Catholics as was his “target”
some 500 years ago.

Now, why would God show me all of those churches in the UK, America and here
in Australia to then go on to say something like that?  Here is what I now
understand:

For all of our dogmatic adherence to our protestant ways, the church of
today (including the supposedly free charismatics and Pentecostals) are just
as guilty, as the Roman Catholics were, of building cathedrals of perverted
prosperity at the expense of their adherents.

Sure, we don’t build cathedrals in the traditional sense anymore, but they
are cathedrals nonetheless! A traditional cathedral was always known for its
imposing size; it’s ability to house thousands at a time; it’s majestic
music and huge choirs; and its contemporary opulence.

If that be the case, please tell me how the aforementioned churches are any
different to the Catholic Cathedrals of old?

1.) They are Known for their Imposing Splendor.
Recently my wife and I saw the tail-end of an episode of “Your Best Life”
with Joel Osteen only to see him dedicating Lakewood Church’s new facility;
an ex-sports stadium capable of seating about 10,000 people at a time. I was
really saddened to consider how excited these people were about dedicating a
monolithic meeting room that would only be used for about 12 hours a week.
Closer to home, it’s astounding how Hillsong Church’s new Bella Vista campus
is the one place many Christians consider a “must-see” when they visit
Sydney.

2.) They are Known for their Ability to House Thousands at a Time
Regardless of whether it is a modern conference-type facility or a sandstone
edifice, whichever way you cut it, the minute we build a facility capable of
housing thousands of adherents at a time for the primary intent of “having
church”, we have built a cathedral.

3.) They are Known for their Majestic Music and Huge Choirs
Here in Australia, the best examples of modern cathedrals in this regard are
Hillsong Church and Christian City Church in Sydney. These two “local”
churches are known for their magnificent music and their choirs. In fact, I
find it tragically hysterical that almost every church that has tried to
adopt their model or style of worship now has a choir, a choir stand and a
choir leader … “but we’re not bound by liturgy. We’re spirit-filled and
free”.

4.) They are Known for their Contemporary Opulence.
One of these churches recently spent in excess of $300,000 on
state-of-the-art digital audio mixing desks for use in their services.
Others have installed the very best commercial quality theatre seating. In
others, the lighting rig alone rivals that of a major rock concert. Lakewood
Church even features a huge slowly rotating globe as a backdrop for the
televising of their services.

I’m not trying to be critical of these mega-churches simply to be seen to
have a post- modernist whinge. What I am trying to communicate is that many
over the centuries have fought with their very lives and reputations to see
us, the church, break free of the things that the Roman Catholic church held
so dear until the time of Martin Luther’s protests. Today we claim to be
living freely in the liberty of those protests and yet we have simply
allowed ourselves to become ensnared in the very things that trapped the men
who led the church after Constantine got his hands on it back in about 300AD
and those are the same traps that ultimately robbed us of the purity and
power of the early church.

Thomas Aquinas is reported as having had an audience with the Pope of his
time. When he was ushered into the Pope’s presence, the Pope gestured
saying, “Look Thomas. Never again will we have to say ’silver and gold I do
not have’”. To which Thomas Aquinas responded, ‘And neither will we ever
again be able to say ‘in the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth rise and walk
’”. Ouch!

When will we ever learn that to build a tower supposedly as an example of
how great God is, when in reality it’s a legacy to how great we are, will
only result in God coming and scattering it and us once again as He did on
the plains of Shinar?

There is a consistent theme of “God-made” vs “man-made” that runs through
the Scriptures, but it’s so subtle you may not have noticed how serious God
is about it.

In the days of old, God always called for altars to be made from uncut,
God-made stone. When Uzza steadied the Ark of the Covenant on the cart, he
lost his life because David was instructed to carry it on the shoulders of
God-made men, not on a man-made cart. Jesus told Peter that He would build
His church upon His revelation about the God-made Christ .. not upon Peter
as a man-made Pope. Further, the church is made up of God- made living
stones with a God-made living Savior as its chief cornerstone. We, God-
made men and women, ARE the temple (the Holy of Holies) of the Holy Spirit.

Do you see it?
My Aussie friend Phil Marshall, who pastors a church in Edmonton, Canada
told me recently that, in the five years to 2005, the church in North
America has spent nearly 25 billion dollars on building programs! Recently
Dr Robert Schuller, founder of the Crystal Cathedral, retired. When asked by
Larry King what he would be doing with his time during retirement, Schuller
replied by telling King that he would dedicate himself to establishing a
fund that would ensure the Crystal Cathedral would always stand and that the
property would never be sold.
When will we begin to live for the things that so many others have given
their lives for over the two millennia since Christ first showed the way
that a life must be lived, a death must be died and a God-made church must
be built?
We must stop investing millions of dollars into structures that are
ultimately of no real value to the Kingdom of God. Sure, we might gather in
them, and people may even become believers, get healed or delivered in them,
but at what cost to the Kingdom? We invest millions, even billions of
dollars into building buildings when we should be investing it into building
lives. We say that’s what the building is ultimately designed for, but when
will we stop fooling ourselves? What it so frequently comes down to is
“mine’s bigger than yours”.
Please don’t misunderstand me. I’m not against buildings for Kingdom
purposes. In some cases we need them. Heck, I live in a building that’s used
for Kingdom purposes .. it’s called my home.
I’m not against the specific churches I’ve already named nor any church for
that matter. I’m not having a rant or making an attack because I “have
issues” with organized religion. I have given much of the last 30 years to
serving the Body of Christ in one form or another .. as an ordained
minister, as an itinerant prophetic teacher, as a general gopher, a church
planter and more. I am passionate about the church.
However, I am motivated to sound a God-inspired alarm for ministries and
churches to stop continually perpetuating the production of the number one
world-wide killer of genuine Christian community and missional activity just
to be seen to have made it among their peers. That number one world-wide
killer? The building program .. especially as it relates to building
mega-church structures.
Why is God concerned about this? I believe it this simple: He wants us to
stop “going to” church and to start “being” the church.
I remember reading that Smith Wigglesworth once said .. “I am a thousand
times bigger on the inside”. I can relate to that. Now that I’m over 40, my
body is changing. Physically I’m a little more ’solid’ (some might rudely
say ‘portly’) than I used to be. As a result, I sometimes like to joke with
people that “I’m a temple of the Holy Ghost and I’m putting on  extensions!”
But all jokes aside, the only building program that God is truly interested
in is for us to corporately work to build who we are in Him, because this is
the only God-made place He Himself desires to dwell in all His fullness.
In the end, if we must build cathedrals, may God be pleased to fill the
expanse of our growing and maturing spirits and may they, and only they ..
being fit together with one another in love .. be the cathedrals of praise
we see built now and in the future.

The Ministry of John the Baptist

By Eric Wheeler
eric@sharingtheway.com

When it was time for the Messiah to be introduced into the world for His first Coming, God sent the Archangel Gabriel to visit Zacharias, a priest who served in the Temple. Gabriel told Zacharias that his wife, Elizabeth, would soon give birth to a baby boy which he was to call John. It was told Zacharias that John would be great in the sight of the Lord, and that he would be filled with the Holy Spirit, even from his mother’s womb. The Holy Scriptures say that “many of the children of Israel shall he turn to the Lord their God. And he shall go before Him in the spirit and power of Elijah, to turn the hearts of the fathers to the children, and the disobedient to the wisdom of the just; to make ready a people prepared for the Lord” (Luke 1:16-17).

Later on after John was born, Zacharias, his father, was filled with the Holy Spirit and prophesied the following: “Blessed be the Lord God of Israel; for He hath visited and redeemed His people. And hath raised up a horn of salvation for us in the house of His servant David; And as He spoke by the mouth of his holy prophets, which have been since the world began: that we should be saved from our enemies, and from the hand of all that hate us; to perform the mercy promised to our fathers, and to remember His holy covenant; the oath which He swore to our father Abraham, that He would grant unto us, that we being delivered out of the hand of our enemies might serve Him without fear, in holiness and righteousness before Him all the days of our life. And thou, child, shalt be called the prophet of the Highest; for thou shalt go before the face of the Lord to prepare His ways; to give knowledge of salvation unto His people by the remission of their sins, through the tender mercy of our God; whereby the dayspring from on high hath visited us; to give light to them that sit in darkness and in the shadow of death, to guide our feet into the way of peace” (Luke 1:67-79).

Many years later when John was a grown man, “the word of God came unto him in the wilderness. And so he went into all the country about Jordan, preaching the baptism of repentance for the remission of sins. As it is written in the Book of Isaiah the prophet, saying, ‘The voice of one crying in the wilderness, ‘Prepare you the way of the Lord; make His paths straight. Every valley shall be filled, and every mountain and hill shall be brought low. And the crooked shall be made straight, and the rough ways shall be made smooth. And all flesh shall see the salvation of God” (Luke 3:2-6).

Many people came forth to be baptized of John. Luke 3:7 calls it “a multitude”. There were Jews and Israelites, Pharisees, Sadducees, lawyers, publicans, prostitutes, soldiers, priests, Levites, and many others that went out to hear John and to be baptized of him. It is interesting to note, that the people came unto John to hear him speak and to be baptized of him. He did not go out to them. They were led to him. “And there went out unto him all the land of Judea, and they of Jerusalem . . .” (Mark 1:5). The Holy Spirit showed me something remarkable about this awhile back in a vision. It pointed out that many different people from many different cultures and denominations of men came unto John and were drawn there by the Holy Spirit to hear John’s preaching and become convicted. The Holy Spirit also described those diverse people who were led to John, by saying, “Behold those who hear the voice of the Lamb.” While I was still in the same vision, I heard the Holy Spirit say, “Just as I called those chosen animals which were to be saved unto Noah and the Ark, so do I cause out of every people those which should be saved to hear my voice.” That voice being referred to in this vision was John the Baptist’s — “the voice crying in the wilderness” — which was really the voice of God.

At another time, I heard the Holy Spirit say, “Lift up the light, and the children of light will come unto the light, but the children of darkness will turn away.” I didn’t understand that saying until a few weeks ago. Jesus said that John was “a burning and a shining light” and that the self-righteous Jews (people of God) were willing for a season to rejoice in his light (John 5:35). However, John “came for a witness, to bear witness of the true Light that all men through him might believe. He [John] was not that Light, but was sent to bear witness of that Light. That [Light] was the true Light, which lights every man that comes into the world” (John 1:6-9). And Jesus said, “As long as I am in the world, I am the Light of the world” (John 9:5). “While you have Light, believe in the Light, that you may be the children of light” (John 12:36). However, “this is the condemnation, that light is come into the world, and men loved darkness rather than light, because their deeds were evil. For everyone that does evil hates the light, neither comes to the light, lest his deeds should be discovered. But he that does truth comes to the light, that his deeds may be made manifest, that they are worked in God” (John 3:19-21).

Jesus told us that John the Baptist was the “Elijah” that was prophesied to come before His First Coming. And Jesus said that “Elijah” will also come again and restore all things before His Second Coming (Matt.17:11). John the Baptist fulfilled this office the first time. But, Jesus’ Second Coming will be more glorious than the First. Therefore, the work of the “Elijah to come” will also be more glorious and far-reaching. I believe that the Holy Spirit has shown me a little of what is ahead.

I was shown that just as the Work of God was being done by John the Baptist under the direct influence of the Holy Spirit in the “wilderness”, apart from the Temple or its organized membership, the same will be true in the future. I do not see one worldwide organization or church heading up the Work of God or serving as the mouthpiece of the Holy Spirit. But rather, individuals ordained by the Spirit of God, and not ordained by men, will serve as witnesses and messengers. God is going to speak to His people everywhere through them – “to prepare a people for their God”. These people will be called out of every nation, church, organization, race, and background. They will be “a people which were not a people”. And God Himself will teach them, as was begun with the preaching of John the Baptist and culminated into the ministry of Christ and His Disciples.

Before the First Coming, it had been approximately 430 years since the word of God had come down from heaven upon the heads of men and women — that is, that we have record of in the Bible. After the books of Daniel and Malachi (known as the Inter-Testament period), it appears that there was a “famine of the word” as was prophesied in Amos 8:11. Then, at the time appointed, God sent Gabriel to tell Zacharias that the time had come that God would once again visit His people. God would give Zacharias a son, which he was to name John, who would “go before the face of the Lord to prepare His ways; to give knowledge of salvation unto His people . . . and to give light to them that sit in darkness and in the shadow of death, and to guide our feet into the way of peace” (Luke 1:76-79).

It is interesting to note here that the people of God were described as “sitting in darkness”. It brings to mind the words of Jesus when He described the future state of His people in His Church during the last days: “Because you say, ‘I am rich, and increased with goods, and have need of nothing; and know not that you are wretched, and miserable, and poor, and blind, and naked. I counsel you to buy of me gold tried in the fire, that you may be rich; and white raiment, that you may be clothed, and that the shame of your nakedness does not appear; and anoint your eyes with eye salve, that you might see. As many as I love, I rebuke and chasten. Be zealous therefore, and repent!” (Rev. 3:17-19).

When the word of God came down upon John the Baptist in the wilderness, he began to preach to the people of God the baptism of repentance for the remission of sins (Luke 3:2-3). When Jesus came down from heaven as the Word of God, He too, began His ministry by telling the people of God to “Repent, and believe the gospel” (Mark 1:15). And when the Holy Spirit came upon Peter and he began to preach to the people of God, he told them to “Repent, and be baptized everyone of you . . . For the promise is unto you, and to your children, and to all that are afar off, even as many as the Lord our God shall call” (Acts 2:38-39). Notice, in every case, that when the word of God came down, it was telling the people of God to repent! In other words, those people who should have been right with God, thought they were right with God, but weren’t! And as Jesus said, they are those “which trusted in themselves that they were righteous” (Luke 18:9). Paul warned the Church, “Let him that thinks he stands take heed” (1 Cor. 10:12).

Here is the meaning to the above statement that the Holy Spirit spoke saying: “Lift up the light, and the children of light will come unto it, but the children of darkness will turn from it.” Right now we are at the beginning of the Second Coming of Christ, and once again, the Holy Spirit has begun coming down from heaven as it was prophesied, “And it shall come to pass in the last days, says God, I will pour out of my Spirit . . . And on my servants and on my handmaidens I will pour out in those days of my Spirit, and they will prophesy [speak with the voice of God]” (Acts 2:17-18). In other words, just as it was the first time, at Jesus’ First Coming, God poured out His Spirit upon John the Baptist first, and then later the disciples, and they began to preach as witnesses. Even so, now at the beginning of His Second Coming, which shall be more glorious than the First Coming, God has once again sent witnesses to bear witness of the Light, telling us to lift up the Light — to be a burning and a shining light — just as John was. It is written, that the self-righteous people rejoiced in his [John’s] light for a season (John 5:35). But later they rejected the true Light that John bore record of. “He [the True Light – Jesus] came unto His own, and His own received Him not. But as many as received Him, to them gave He power to become the sons of God, even to them that believe on His name”(John 1:11-12). Likewise, the self-righteous people today, who trust in themselves that they are righteous, will come face to face with the Spirit of God in these witnesses, and either be revealed as children of light or children of darkness. Notice, that they are called “children” and not “adults”! That is, they have not yet matured, and it has not yet been made known what they will grow up to be! But the Spirit of God knows the future and the Word of God “is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart” (Heb.4:12).
At the First Coming of Christ, nobody except John the Baptist and Jesus knew the hypocrisy and the self-righteousness that would be revealed in the religious leaders and their converts! “But when he [John the Baptist] saw many of the Pharisees and Sadducees come to his baptism, he said unto them, ‘O generation of vipers, who has warned you to flee from the wrath to come? Bring forth therefore fruits suitable for repentance!” (Matt.3:7-8). And Jesus likewise rebuked them saying, “Woe unto you, Scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you compass sea and land to make one proselyte, and when he is made, you make him two-fold more the child of hell than yourselves . . . Even so you also outwardly appear righteous unto men, but within you are full of hypocrisy and iniquity. . . You serpents, you generation of vipers, how can you escape the damnation of hell?!” (Matt.23:15-33).

Jesus told them that they were willing to put up with John the Baptist for a little while, but they ultimately refused to do what he said. And later, when Jesus preached to them, they as children of darkness endured Him for a little season trying to discredit Him, and then later their hate grew into conspiring against Him to destroy Him, and then finally when God allowed it, they killed Him! Thus, they as children became adults of darkness as they matured in their wickedness — refusing to repent! It started out as pride, envy, and self-righteousness. Jesus was beginning to take away their numbers, threatening their positions, rebuking them for their hypocrisy! He spoke the truth, not caring about what men thought or who or what men esteemed. He didn’t rise up through their organizations or receive His education from their seminaries! Where was His degree or master of divinity?! Who gave Him a title or ordained Him to preach?! Why doesn’t He hold to the same traditions and sacraments?! Who does He think He is?! And by what authority does He teach these things?! These are the thoughts that went through the religious leaders minds early on, until finally, as Jesus said, “When I was daily with you in the temple, you stretched forth no hands against me, but this is your hour, and the power of darkness” (Luke 22:53). And they took Him and killed Him!

Truth or Fables – Which?

By Eric Wheeler
eric@sharingtheway.com

Shortly before his death, the Apostle Paul warned us that many in Christendom would soon fall away from the truth of God’s Word and would began to embrace fables taught by men. He prophesied, “For the time will come when men will not put up with sound doctrine. Instead, to suit their own desires, they will gather around them a great number of teachers to say what their itching ears want to hear. They will turn their ears away from the truth and turn aside to fables” (II Tim. 4:3-4).

What is a fable? Zondervan’s Compact Bible Dictionary defines a fable as “a story having no connection with reality”. Webster’s New World Dictionary defines a fable as “a myth or a falsehood”. In other words, Paul said that some in Christianity were going to leave the Word of God – the Bible (the Truth), and begin to teach and preach myths and falsehoods instead. Jesus said that the number of people who were going to do this wouldn’t be a few, but many! For He said that many would come in His name (that is, in the name of Christianity) and would deceive many (Matt. 24:5).

My brothers and sisters, unfortunately, this is sadly true. Many in Christendom believe and teach things that are not Biblical or true. In fact, they are patently false and un-Biblical! I am sure that this may surprise many Christians, but below is a list of some of those false doctrines and fables that are being taught and propagated as being Biblical: (None of these doctrines and heretical teachings is found in the Bible.)
1) You must be an “ordained minister” to baptize
2) Christmas is a celebration of Jesus’ birthday
3) Easter is a celebration of Jesus resurrection
4) The doctrine of the Trinity
5) The doctrine of the Rapture
6) The clergy/laity system
7) The belief that you are “going to heaven” when you die
8) The doctrine of “accepting Jesus into your heart”
9) Saying the “Sinner’s Prayer”
10) Altar calls
11) Infant baptism and baptism by sprinkling of water
12) Saturday or Sunday is the only day of worship
13)“Planting a financial seed of faith” doctrine
14) New Testament “tithing”
15) Required church attendance.
16) Homosexuality is acceptable – belief that you are “born that way”.
17) Being “slain or drunk in the Spirit”
18) Patriotism and swearing/pledging allegiance to a country or flag
19) Wearing religious robes, collars and spiritual apparel
20) Having and using religious titles
21) Women as pastors and elders
22) Confessionals/”accountability partners”
23) The belief that people must “qualify” to be baptized

Again Paul warns, “The Spirit clearly says that in later times some will abandon the faith and follow deceiving spirits and things taught by demons. Such teachings come through hypocritical liars… Have nothing to do with godless fables and old wives’ tales. Rather, train yourself to be godly.” (I Tim. 4:1-7).

The Bible and the Holy Spirit are the only teachers that we are to follow! And the Holy Spirit always leads us and teaches us in accordance with the Word of God (John 16:13-15). If any man, woman, spirit, or tradition teaches anything contrary to the Word of God, then we are clearly commanded not to follow them! The Bible is very explicit regarding this! Notice these Scriptures:
“Evil men and impostors will grow worse and worse, deceiving and being deceived. But as for you, continue in the things which you have learned and been assured of knowing from Whom you have learned them, and that from childhood you have known the Holy Scriptures, which are able to make you wise for salvation through faith which is in Christ Jesus. All Scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness, that the man of God may be complete, thoroughly equipped for every good work. I charge you therefore before God and the Lord Jesus Christ…preach the Word! Be ready in season and out of season. Convince, rebuke, exhort, with all longsuffering and teaching. For the time will come when they will not endure sound doctrine…and they will turn their ears away from the truth, and be turned aside to fables.” (II Tim. 3:13-4:4).

“Little children, it is the last hour, and as you have heard that the Antichrist is coming, even now many antichrists have come, by which we know that it is the last hour. They went out from us, but they were not of us. For if they had been of us, they would have continued with us. But they went out that they might be made manifest that none of them were of us. But you have an anointing from the Holy One, and you know all things. I have not written to you because you do not know the truth [the Word of God – John 17:17], but because you know it, and that no lie is of the truth…Therefore let that abide in you which you have heard from the beginning. If what you heard from the beginning [the Word of God] abides in you, you also will abide in the Son and in the Father…These things I have written to you concerning those who try to deceive you. But the anointing [the Holy Spirit] which you have received from Him abides in you, and you do not need that anyone teach you; but as the same anointing teaches you concerning all things, and is true, and is not a lie, and just as it has taught you, you will abide in Him [the Word of God].” (I John 2:18-27).

“I marvel that you are turning away so soon from Him who called you in the grace of Christ, to a different gospel, which is not another [gospel]; for there are some who trouble you and want to pervert the gospel of Christ. But even if we, or an angel of heaven preach any other gospel to you than what we have preached to you, let him be accursed. As we have said before, so now I say again, if anyone preaches any other gospel to you that what you have received, let him be accursed. For do I now persuade men or God? Or do I seek to please men? For if I still pleased men, I would not be a servant of Christ. But I make known to you, brethren, that the gospel which was preached by me is not according to man. For I neither received it from man, nor was I taught it, but it came through the revelation of Jesus Christ [the Word of God].” (Gal. 1:6-12).

Jesus rebuked the religious leaders of His day for doing away with the Word of God to keep and teach their own traditions!

“He answered and said to them, ‘Well did Isaiah prophesy of you hypocrites, as it is written: “This people honor Me with their lips, but their heart is far from Me. And in vain they worship Me, teaching as doctrines the commandments of men.” For laying aside the commandment of God, you hold the tradition of men…All to well you reject the commandment of God, that you may keep your tradition.” (Mark. 7:6-9).

Don’t think for a minute that I am coming down on people or judging them, or that I am “anti-church”, or here to judge and criticize ministers! I am not. I am merely affirming the fact that the Biblical prophesies and warnings that Paul and Jesus gave regarding the latter days have come true. Many people who claim to be Christians both teach and believe things that are clearly not Biblical! I didn’t realize this until the Lord recently verbally corrected me regarding an inaccurate and un-Biblical belief that I held. Let me explain.

A little over a year ago, I was invited to go to a couple’s house for dinner. I knew the man quite well because he was a friend of mine, but I did not know his wife at all. As I was sitting with them enjoying the meal, the Lord suddenly spoke to me and said, “I have sent you here for her. You will baptize her this night, lay hands of her, and give her the gift of My Holy Spirit.” I immediately responded to Him in my head by saying, “Lord, I cannot baptize her. I don’t know her!” He answered definitively, “You don’t need to know her, for I know her!” “But Lord,” I protested, “She doesn’t know the gospel. She doesn’t know the Bible. She doesn’t attend church anywhere. She hasn’t been taught anything. She hasn’t counseled with a minister, read any church booklets, studied the …” He immediately cut me off! I felt the anger in His voice as He replied, “Truly, truly, it is written that you men lay aside the commandment of God to keep your own traditions! For I said, ‘Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit’. But you men say, ‘No, let them first be taught, by reading our booklets, doing our correspondence courses, and attending our churches, and then let them come and be baptized!’ Truly, truly, as it is written, you rebellious men full well reject the commandment of God to keep your own vain traditions! Go and do what I’ve told you!”

Needless to say, I was speechless! My whole entire Biblical paradigm shifted at that very moment. When I heard God say that, I knew that He was right. But I had never realized it before. I had been brought up to believe, and been taught to believe by the church and by the Bible College that I had attended that a potential convert had to first understand certain Biblical doctrines and teachings; be attending church services regularly somewhere; be studying and reading the church literature; paying their tithes; and generally being and playing the part of the “accepted Christian” – whatever that is!

After a few gulps of water, I nervously said, “Um, Dean and Jennifer? I don’t know how you are going to take this. But Jennifer, I was sent here for you by the Lord God. He told me that I must baptize you and give you the gift of His Holy Spirit this night, if you are willing.” I didn’t know what she was going to say or do! There was a moment of awkward silence, and then I noticed tears begin to well-up in her eyes. She softly whispered, “So He did hear me, didn’t He?!” After a few moments of joyous tears, she explained to me and her husband, “Last night, I asked God in prayer to please reveal Himself to me. I wanted to know Him. I wanted to see Him. I wanted to have a deep relationship with Him. But I didn’t know how, and I didn’t know what to do. And now He has shown me that He loves me, and that He hears me. Yes, I am willing [to be baptized]. Let’s do it right now!” She immediately stood up right in the middle of dinner, and went straight to her Jacuzzi tub without even changing her clothes. I baptized her, and laid my hands on her asking God to give her His Holy Spirit as He had commanded me to and according to His Holy Word (Acts 2:38; 8:14-17).

It is through His Holy Spirit that we come to know God. We first believe in Jesus Christ (the literal Word of God), repent, get baptized, and then receive the free gift of His Holy Spirit which is the mind of Christ and the very nature of God. It is through His Holy Spirit that He writes His Laws, His Ways, and His Words on our hearts (Heb. 8:10-12). The Holy Spirit then teaches us and leads us into all Truth (John 16:13; I John 2:27). It is that simple! Once we are baptized, and receive His Holy Spirit, we don’t need another person to teach us or instruct us. For as it is written: “They shall all be taught by God” (John 6:45; Isa. 54:13). And again it says, “None of them shall teach his neighbor, and none his brother, saying, ‘Know the Lord,’ for all shall know Me, from the least of them to the greatest of them.” (Heb. 8:11; Jer. 31:34).

That is not to say that there is no place for the ministry. Quite the contrary! For God, Himself, gave to the Church [His people] the different ministries for the equipping and building-up (edifying) of the saints (I Cor. 12:4-7, 28; Eph. 4:11-16). Brothers and sisters, we who believe in His Word are the saints! The five-fold ministry (apostles, prophets, evangelists, pastors, and teachers) are given by God to exhort, teach, encourage, correct, and admonish the individual believers to look to God and to His Word so that false preachers and teachers can’t lead us astray to follow after them believing fables and lies rather than the Truth of God. True ministers empower the people of God, by encouraging them to become fruitful and active ministers (servants) themselves by pointing them to the Word of God and to faith in the Lord Jesus Christ. They don’t gather the disciples together around themselves, imprisoning them in “church” buildings in order to make them “perpetual students”! Jesus didn’t even do this! For in due time, He sent them out, so that His students (disciples) became teachers (apostles – “ones sent”) themselves! For He told them, “Go, and make disciples (students) of all nations, baptizing them… and teaching them to observe all things that I have commanded you!” (Matt. 28:19-20). Notice, Jesus said that His disciples were to train and teach other disciples, who in turn were to be sent out to baptize and train other disciples, who in turn, baptize and make other disciples, and so on and so on. For He said that they were to instruct them in all that Jesus commanded them to do!

What good does it do for the Kingdom’s sake if the disciples are just perpetually sitting in church services, ever learning as students, but never becoming teachers themselves? Paul described them as “always learning and never able to come to the knowledge of the truth” (II Tim. 3:7). He warned those people who were sitting there in church as perpetual students that they needed to grow up: “For though by this time you ought to be teachers yourselves, you need someone to teach you again the first principles of the oracles of God, and you have come to need milk and not solid food. For everyone who partakes of milk is unskilled in the Word of righteousness [the Bible], for he is a babe. But solid food belongs to those who are mature, that is, those who by reason of practice have their senses exercised to discern both good and evil.” (Heb. 5:12-14).
My friends, if we are not studying God’s Word, and regularly practicing it and sharing it in faith, we are not growing! We are becoming unproductive and unfruitful! And Jesus warns that we are in danger of being “cast out” as an unbeliever (Matt. 25:30). God has called us to grow and mature in Christ – the Word of God. Too many Christians are just sitting around in spiritual complacency, not abiding by or living in the Word of God. Many Christians are not even familiar with what the Word of God truly says! Consequently, they are being led astray by false pastors and teachers who are teaching fables, falsehoods, and traditions of men, which only cause the people to deceptively believe that they are spiritually okay and right with God. The Scriptures are very clear that Jesus is soon coming back and many in the Church who are now “slumbering and sleeping” are going to wake up too late, and find themselves denied entrance into the Kingdom of God with Jesus saying to them, “I do not know you!”(Matt. 25:1-13). For Jesus, Himself, said, “Not everyone who says to Me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ shall enter the Kingdom of Heaven, but he who does the will of My Father in heaven. For many will say to Me in that day, ‘Lord, Lord, have we not spoken in Your name, cast out demons in Your name, and done many wonders in Your name?’ And then I will declare to them, ‘I never knew you! Depart from Me, you who practice iniquity!” (Matt. 7:21-23). He who has ears to hear, let him hear.

Are We Doing The Tasks That God Gives Us?

by Greg Turner

gregt@greenboxent.com

What is the book of Jonah about? Is it just a simple bed-time story to tell kids to get them interested in the Bible? Maybe.  Or was it recorded so that Jesus could point to it so that His disciples would have a sign about His death and resurrection? Definitely. The book of Jonah is also a story about a man, a servant of God, who ignored a job that God had for him. This story is applicable to every Christian today. Let’s see how.

A little background research shows that Jonah the prophet was the son of Amittai of Gath Heber, a town located in the land of Zebulun (Joshua 19:13). This town was about 32 miles north of Samaria the capital of Israel. God clearly worked with Jonah on at least one other occasion as can be seen in II Kings 14:25 where God had him give a message to king Jeroboam II the son of king Joash of Israel. Notice that Jonah was a contemporary of Amos (Amos 1:1). Amos prophesied about the coming destruction of many nations around Israel including Israel. Jonah was also a contemporary of Hosea (Hosea 1:1) who also prophesied about the fall of Israel among other things. During this time period, King Uzziah ruled Judah and King Jeroboam II ruled Israel, and they enjoyed great military success against all of the other kingdoms around them, and they were able to restore the borders of Israel to the same extent, if not larger, than they were during the time of King David (see 2 Chron. 26 and II Kings 14). Since Israel and Judah controlled the “king’s highway” through Palestine, they were able to control a lot of the trade between all of the kingdoms around them, including Edom (south of the Dead Sea), Moab (east of the Dead Sea), Ammon (east of Jordan), Philistia (southwest of Israel), Aram (later called Syria which is north of Israel), Phoenicia (northeast of Israel on the coast) and the land of the Hittites (north of Syria). Various commentaries consider this time period to be the economic and military peak of the Israelite Kingdoms. Notice that Amos also speaks of the wealth in Israel at this time in Amos 3:15. It says that people had lavish houses and summer and winter homes! So the time in which Jonah lived seems comparable to our current time (at least in the western nations of the world) with respect to economic trade, jobs, houses, military might and safety. Jeroboam II reigned from about 782BC to 753BC, and apparently, it was only 32 years later that the Assyrians destroyed Samaria (the capital of Israel) in 721BC and carried Israel away into captivity. Generally, one generation in Israel was considered 40 years. So Israel was destroyed within one generation from Jonah’s time. In fact, within 10 years, Israel was already sending tribute to the Assyrians (II Kings 15:19) to keep them at bay.

So what happened to Jonah the prophet of God when God gave him a task to do (Jonah 1:1)?  It would seem that Israel had at least two other battles with Assyria that are not recorded in the Bible, but are inscribed on stone objects found at Kurkh and Nimrud, both cities in Assyria. The Kurkh stone object records a battle between Ahab (king of Israel) and Shalmaneser III which took place around 853BC, almost 100 years before Jeroboam II. The Nimrud stone object records that Shalmaneser III received tribute from Jehu son of Omri king of Israel around 841BC. Obviously, these two nations had been bitter enemies for a while. This on-going rivalry may have been the reason that Jonah did not want to go to Nineveh to tell them to repent. The people of Israel were also very self-righteous, thinking that they only were the people of God, and could not possibly think that the gentiles were worthy of repentance. We see this same attitude existing in the New Testament seven-hundred years later with the Pharisees (see Luke 18:10)! We also note that this same attitude was even among the Apostles at the beginning of their work (Acts 10:28), even though Jesus commanded them to go into all of the world (Matt. 28:19). Eventually, Jesus had to show Peter that they must go to the gentiles also (Acts 10:1-48). Regardless of Jonah’s reasons, his attitude was not right, and he actually tried to flee from God to avoid doing what God had asked him to do. He went about 60 miles south to Joppa, a city on the Mediterranean coast, to catch a ship headed to Tarshish (Jonah 1:3). He was really trying hard to escape God’s task! For Tarshish (also spelled Tartessus) was located far-away in southwestern Spain according to most ancient maps! It was a city where many metals were obtained from by ship (see Psalm 72:10, Jer. 10:9, Ezek. 27:12, 25).

So here was a man of God who had the Holy Spirit, since he was called a prophet, and prophecy is a gift of the Spirit (I Cor. 12:10). All who have the Spirit are a part of the body of Christ (I Cor. 12:12), and the gifts of the Spirit must be used to profit all (I Cor. 12:7). In other words, we are not given these gifts to go hide like Jonah was trying to do. We must face the world openly (Matt. 5:16, Phil. 2:15) and then we must do the tasks that Jesus gives us (Luke 6:46). Some will think that because Jonah was a prophet that it was a full-time job for him. Really? We don’t know that, and one does not have to work for the Lord full-time to do His tasks. Notice that Amos was a prophet and his full-time job was as a sheepherder (Amos 7:14). Yet, he got up and did the tasks that the Lord commanded of him (Amos 7:15-17), and it cost him his job and he was kicked out of his home country (Amos 7:12-13). Note also that we all are priests (I Peter 2:9) and have a ministry, just as Jonah did, and so there is no escape from the works that God will have us do (I Peter 2:12) – unless we are unprofitable servants (Matt. 25:26-30). Notice in Luke 17:6-10 that God’s commands and His tasks are different. If we just do His commands, then we are unprofitable. What are His commands? They are summed up in Matt. 22:37-39 (see also Rom. 13:8-10, Gal. 5:14). We are to love God first and then love our neighbor as ourselves. We know these. These are a given and must be done. Our tasks are generically described in Matt. 28:19 and Matt. 10:8-27 (see also James 2:8-26 for a taste of our daily works). There are many Scriptures that describe what our tasks are, but that is the focus of a different article. This article is about listening to God and then doing His will.

So what happened next with Jonah? Jonah makes it to the ship and heads out, but he can not hide from God (Jonah 1:4). God brings signs and wonders to let Jonah know that he needs to turn back and do God’s will. Did this affect Jonah? No! He was sleeping and slumbering. Sounds familiar. What state are Christians in today? Jesus said they are sleeping and slumbering (Matt. 25:5). All of them – even the five virgins with the Holy Spirit! It is interesting to note that right after Jesus said everyone is sleeping that in Matt. 25:14-29 He shows that His servants are to be doing God’s work. And that as they do His work, they will be given more, and those that don’t do the tasks that they are given will have those tasks taken away and given to those that are doing their tasks. What is God doing about those that are not doing His works? He is sending signs and wonders all around us (Matt. 24:7, Acts 2:19, Heb. 2:4) so that we will wake up and do His works.

Notice that Jonah did not even notice the signs as he was too busy sleeping. Even the gentiles recognized the sign, but they did not have a real god to help them (Jonah 1:5). A gentile had to come and wake Jonah up and ask him to call on his God. How sad. When disasters (earthquakes, hurricanes, tornadoes, tidal waves, etc.) are happening all around us and people are calling out to their gods and wondering where God is and why He is allowing these things to happen, are we there helping them to seek the one true and real God (Rom. 3:29-30, Mark 12:29-32, I Cor. 8:4-6, Eph. 4:6, 1 Tim. 2:5)? Or are we sleeping and slumbering like Jonah?

God will not tolerate the sleeping and slumbering and the ignoring of His tasks for too long.  He cast Jonah into the belly of a whale for a few days to let Jonah know that He has work for him to do (Jonah 1:17), and it was not a pleasant time (Jonah 2). Similarly, He will spew us out if we do not start doing His works.

Rev. 3:15-22 says: “I know your works, that you are neither cold nor hot. I could wish you were cold or hot.  So then, because you are lukewarm, and neither cold nor hot, I will vomit you out of My mouth. Because you say, ‘I am rich, have become wealthy, and have need of nothing’— and do not know that you are wretched, miserable, poor, blind, and naked — I counsel you to buy from Me gold refined in the fire, that you may be rich; and white garments, that you may be clothed, that the shame of your nakedness may not be revealed; and anoint your eyes with eye salve, that you may see.  As many as I love, I rebuke and chasten. Therefore be zealous and repent.  Behold, I stand at the door and knock. If anyone hears My voice and opens the door, I will come in to him and dine with him, and he with Me.  To him who overcomes I will grant to sit with Me on My throne, as I also overcame and sat down with My Father on His throne. He who has an ear, let him hear what the Spirit says to the churches”

Are we in a dark place and does everything seem to be going wrong around us? Then chances are we are ignoring what God has called us to do and He is chastening us for it (see Heb 12:7-28 and in particular verse 7 and 25). So what are we to do? Just as Jonah did, we are to pray to God to pull us out of the dark place that we are in if we are not doing His works (Jonah 2:7). God then reminded him of His task (Jonah 3:1-2), and Jonah completed the task (Jonah 3:3-4), and over 120,000 people (the estimated number of people living in Nineveh at that time) were saved (Jonah 4:11)! Notice that when we as Christians go to God in fasting and prayer (Matt. 17:21) that we will have the faith to do the works that Christ did and more! Jesus said in John 14:12 -14, “Most assuredly, I say to you, he who believes in Me, the works that I do he will do also; and greater works than these he will do, because I go to My Father. And whatever you ask in My name, that I will do, that the Father may be glorified in the Son. If you ask anything in My name, I will do it.”

God has clearly given us the power and abilities to do the tasks that He has given us, so it is time to wake up and do them or the door will be shut on us (Matt. 25:10).

The Sufferings Of Christ: The Way Of The Lord

by Eric Wheeler

eric@sharingtheway.com

The Holy Spirit has been talking to me about the way in which God chooses to work. He does not do things according to the way that we think they should be done. For it is written, "My thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways My ways, says the Lord. For as the heavens are higher than the earth, so are My ways higher than your ways, and My thoughts than your thoughts" (Isa. 55:8-9).

How many of us would choose the way of suffering as the means in which to know God more intimately? Not many of us, I’m sure. And yet that is exactly the way God has ordained it to be! For He said through the Apostle Paul, "For to you it has been granted on behalf of Christ, not only to believe in Him, but also to suffer for His sake, having the same conflict which you saw in me [Paul] and now hear is in me…. But what things were gain to me, these I have counted loss for Christ. But indeed I also count all things loss for the excellence of the knowledge of Christ Jesus my Lord, for whom I have suffered the loss of all things, and count them as rubbish, that I may gain Christ and be found in Him, not having my own righteousness, which is from the law, but that which is through faith in Christ, the righteousness which is from God by faith; that I may know Him and the power of His resurrection, and the fellowship of His sufferings, being conformed to His death, if by any means, I may attain to the resurrection from the dead" (Phil. 1:29-30; 3:7-11).

Jesus said to His followers, "If anyone desires to come after Me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross, and follow Me. For whoever desires to save his life will lose it, and whoever loses his life for My sake will find it" (Matt. 16:24-25). In addition to this, the Holy Spirit reminded me this morning that "those who are Christ’s have crucified the flesh with its passions and desires" (Gal. 5:24).

These are hard words. Yes, they are not words that are easily received or digested. In fact, they are not words that the flesh wants to hear at all. But I was reminded by the Holy Spirit what Jesus said to Ananias when He declared to him how He was going to use the Apostle Paul: "Go, for he is a chosen vessel of Mine to bear My name before Gentiles, kings, and the children of Israel. For I will show him how many things he must suffer for My name’s sake" (Acts 9:15-16). Yes, the way of God is about suffering. It is about loneliness. It is about rejection. It is not easy. It is not fun. But it is the way of God. And thereby, the way to eternal life (Matt. 7:14; Matt. 10:39).

It is written of Jesus that He was despised and rejected by men. It describes Him in Isaiah as “a man of sorrows and a man acquainted with grief”. It says that "we hid our faces from Him” and that we did not esteem Him. That He bore our griefs and carried our sorrows. It says that even though we considered Him stricken, afflicted and smitten by God, we nevertheless turned away from Him, and did not regard Him. And that the Lord laid on Him the sins of us all. It says that He was wounded for our transgressions, and bruised for our iniquities. That our chastisement was upon Him, and that by His stripes we were healed. It says that He was oppressed and sorely afflicted, and yet He did not open His mouth nor complain. And in all of this suffering, it says that "it pleased the Lord to bruise Him and to put Him to grief" (Isa. 53:3-10).

This was the will of God and His way! It pleased God to have Jesus suffer. In fact, Jesus even said that it was necessary that He had to suffer (Luke 24:26, 46). Do we, as Jesus’ disciples, think that our calling is any different?! For we were called to partake in His sufferings! Isn’t that what the Scripture says? "For to this you were called, because Christ also suffered for us, leaving us an example, that we should follow His steps" (I Pet. 2:21). And again it says, "Therefore, since Christ suffered for us in the flesh, arm yourselves also with the same mind. For he who has suffered in the flesh has ceased from sin, that he no longer should live the rest of his time in the flesh for the lusts of men, but for the will of God" (I Pet. 4:1-2).

It is written that Jesus learned obedience by the things which He suffered (Heb. 5:8). And that as the captain of our salvation, He was made perfect through those sufferings (Heb. 2:10). Jesus said that the servant is not greater than his master. But that it is fitting that the servant be like his master (Matt. 10:24-25). In other words, He suffered as our Master, therefore we should expect to suffer as His servants. But He promises that if we are willing to partake of His sufferings, then we will also have our part in His glory (I Pet. 4:13). For He guarantees that “the sufferings of this present time are not worthy to be compared with the glory which shall be revealed in us" (Rom. 8:18).

As His servants and disciples then, let’s be willing to wholeheartedly embrace our crosses for His sake, as He so willingly embraced His cross for ours!

Christianity And Americanism

By Teresa Wheeler
teresa@tw-graphics.com

A subject that has been on my mind and heart lately, and one that I believe to be an issue to anyone in the church in America, is that of reconciling being a Christian with being an American. Apart from the natural pride in one’s country, there seems to be a pervasive attitude among Christians, that this country, with the religious freedom it affords, the fact that it is considered a predominately “Christian” nation, that it was founded on “Christian values”, that it promotes “justice” and “truth” (while some other nations of the world could be construed as “evil”), is somehow special, worthy of preserving and protecting.

As Christians, and as citizens of the United States, how should we view our country? How does patriotism fit into our Christian walk?

This subject is huge. And hugely controversial.

Along the lines of this topic, I had one particular instance of answered prayer that has shaped my perspective. On the evening of September 11th, 2001, we met with some friends to hear President Bush’s televised response to the horror of that day. In the midst of the President’s address, and our conversations, I felt incredibly confused, and I consequently excused myself to pray.

I had a million questions running through my head.
‘God, you allowed these horrible terrorist attacks. They were obviously within Your will. So why did they happen? Was it a punishment? A call to repentance?

As the leader of this country, President Bush has declared war on the enemy. But how can he, as a Christian, resolve to murder the enemy? Lord, aren’t You our Avenger? Or, in the case of a government, have you given this right to men?

And what about me personally as a Christian in this country? Can I stand up as an intercessor, as Abraham did? Can this nation be “reclaimed” for You? Was it ever Yours in the first place?

Lord, what is Your will on these matters?!?’

I instantaneously was given an answer. It was within my mind, but outside of my own thoughts. I knew it was Him: “America has had its chance, and now it is too late. Don’t concern yourself with the politics of the day. Your citizenship is in Heaven. Your allegiance is to Me. In the end, this country and all others will come to nothing, and all knees will bow to Me. It is My will that this be accomplished. Do not be distracted!”

I understood this to mean that the time for intercession was over. As Lot and his family were directed, it was time for me to turn my back and remove my heart from this country, because this country will ultimately falter.

This has been my blanket approach to war and politics over the last few years. However, I’ve had to revisit my beliefs just recently in response to some growing trends in the Christian community. Was this message specifically for me for that moment in time? Or was it a warning that might be relevant and true for others as well?

I have been greatly concerned that there seems to be a popular movement within the Christian community to involve itself in the government of the land. And often the rallying cry is to restore all things to the original intent of the founding fathers (who, I might add, seem to get the same respect as the patriarchs of the Bible). I receive emails each week, that urge Christians to become politically active when it comes to issues such as prayer in school, removal of the Ten Commandments from public display, doing away with “under God” in the Pledge of Allegiance, and “In God We Trust” from the dollar bill. We even have religious leaders calling for assassinations of foreign Heads of State and Christian organizations lobbying within the government as the “voice of God” for political reform.

It strikes me as an unholy union.

A country such as China, with droves of new converts, is a perfect example that God doesn’t need the cooperation of men’s government to accomplish His tasks. So why are we so bent on reforming and preserving a faltering human institution? Or perhaps our hearts, our sense of security, our religion, and our entire identities are tightly wrapped up in this package called “America”.

God gives us some instruction concerning the nature of our relationship with men’s governments. Firstly, He wants us to know that He Himself sets up the kingdoms of men and He tears them down according to His will (Dan.2:21, 37-38; 4:17, 25-26). Secondly, He says that He appoints all of the governments and authorities that exist on this earth and that we, as Christians, should therefore willingly submit ourselves to them.

“Let every soul be subject to the governing authorities. For there is no authority except from God, and the authorities that exist are appointed by God. Therefore whoever resists the authority resists the ordinance of God, and those who resist will bring judgment on themselves. For rulers are not a terror to good works, but to evil. Do you want to be unafraid of the authority? Do what is good, and you will have praise from the same. For he is God’s minister to you for good. But if you do evil, be afraid; for he does not bear the sword in vain; for he is God’s minister, an avenger to execute wrath on him who practices evil. Therefore you must be subject, not only because of wrath but also for conscience’ sake.” (Rom. 13:1-5).

Yes, God appoints the governments that exist on this earth, as His ministers of justice, and He directs us, as Christians, to be subject to them just as foreign ambassadors and emissaries are subject to the laws of their host country. However, the country that we are currently residing in is NOT OUR COUNTRY! Our citizenship is in Heaven, not on earth. The Bible says that we are ambassadors for Jesus Christ (II Cor. 5:20). We represent another country and a different Kingdom. Notice these verses:

Jesus said, “My Kingdom is not of this world. If My Kingdom were of this world, My servants would fight [resist]…” (John 18:36)

“For our citizenship is in heaven, from which we also eagerly wait for the Savior, the Lord Jesus Christ.” (Phil. 3:20)

“But you are a chosen generation, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, His own special people, that you may proclaim the praises of Him, who called you out of darkness into His marvelous light; who once were not a people but are now the people of God, who had not obtained mercy but now have obtained mercy.”
(I Peter 2:9)

No ambassador representing another country or kingdom partakes in the host country’s political and/or military affairs. That is none of their business or concern. Like our spiritual forefathers before us, we are to consider ourselves pilgrims and strangers on this earth dwelling on foreign soil.

“These [the Biblical patriarchs and matriarchs] all died in faith, not having received the promises, but having seen them afar off were assured of them, embraced them, and confessed that they were strangers and pilgrims on the earth. For those who say such things declare plainly that they seek a homeland. And truly if they had been mindful of that country from which they had come out of, they would have had opportunity to return. But now they desire a better, that is, a heavenly country. Therefore God is not ashamed to be called their God, for He has prepared a city for them” (Heb. 11:13-16) – the New Jerusalem – the holy city, “whose builder and maker is God” (Heb. 11:10; Rev. 21:2).

As was already mentioned above, although we are not citizens of this country in which we reside, we nonetheless are commanded to obey the laws of the land. However, when there is conflict between the laws of our host country and the laws of our King, we are further instructed to adhere to our King’s laws instead of man’s laws. For we are told that “we ought to obey God rather than men” in such cases (Acts 5:29).
“Therefore submit yourselves to every ordinance of man for the Lord’s sake, whether to the king as supreme, or to governors, as to those who are sent by him for the punishment of evildoers and for the praise of those who do good. For this is the will of God, that by doing good you may put to silence the ignorance of foolish men – as free, yet not using your liberty as a cloak for vice, but as servants of God. Honor all people. Love the brotherhood. Fear God. Honor the King.” (I Peter 2:13-17)

“I exhort therefore, that, first of all, supplications, prayers, intercessions, and giving of thanks, be made for all men; for kings, and for all that are in authority; that we may lead a quiet and peaceable life in all godliness and honesty. For this is good and acceptable in the sight of God our Savior; who will have all men to be saved, and to come unto the knowledge of the truth. For there is one God, and one mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus.” (I Timothy 2:1-5)

God says that peace and quiet in the land is good. However, God’s instruction to us to achieve this is to lift up prayers, supplications, intercessions, and thanksgivings to Him. Not by using human means such as political threats, boycotting, and petition drives. We are also reminded that there is but one Mediator between God and men, that being Christ Jesus. Christ, therefore, is the only “Political Advocate” we need. If we are concerned or alarmed about a situation in the land, we only need to go to Him in prayer!
We are admonished to live in submission to our earthly leaders, our examples serving as a testimony of the true King. As the Apostle Peter says, if suffering is unjustly meted out to us at the hands of those who rule over us, then we should endure it for righteousness’ sake. Just as Christ suffered, so we also should be willing to suffer:

“Servants, be submissive to your masters with all fear, not only to the good and gentle, but also to the harsh. For this is commendable, if because of conscience toward God one endures grief, suffering wrongfully. For what credit is it if, when you are beaten for your faults, you take it patiently? But when you do good and suffer for it, if you take it patiently, this is commendable before God. For to this you were called, because Christ also suffered for us, leaving us an example, that you should follow His steps.” (I Peter 2:18-21).
If God allows us to live under oppressive or unrighteous rulers, the commandment is to “resist not evil, but offer the other cheek” (Matt. 5:39). We are to suffer as Christ did, and to beseech Him as our Advocate and Mediator.

Jesus Himself provided us the ultimate example in dealing with human government. Upon being betrayed and arrested (not to mention, later illegally prosecuted and unjustly executed), one of His disciples drew his sword and cut off the ear of the servant of the high priest. Jesus’ response was:
“Put your sword in its place, for all who take the sword will perish by the sword. Or do you think that I cannot now pray to My Father, and He will provide Me with more than twelve legions of angels?” (Matt. 26:52)

Once again, the call is not to “activism”, but to beseeching God. (Though in this circumstance, Jesus knowing the will of His Father did not ask for such intervention.)

If our leaders take away our religious freedoms, while promoting and allowing sinful practices, our reaction should be to drop to our knees and pray! If it is His will, our Lord can soften the hearts of our leaders. And if it is not His will, we must endure it, and realize that His Work and Will are still being accomplished.

I submit that darkness will settle over this country in the days to come. Though this is not a gloom and doom scenario! By contrast, in darkness our lights will shine even brighter so that many more will be saved! Throughout history, peace has been the exception and not the standard for God’s people. God manipulates the governments of this world according to His Purposes. And this doesn’t mean that we will be comfortable. In Acts 8:1-4 God allowed a great persecution so that the Church might be scattered and “those who were scattered went everywhere preaching the Word.” The Apostle Paul did much of his work from a prison cell where he was “content in all things.” As American Christians, we are comfortable, and certainly do not want the status quo to be upset. We are “rich, have become wealthy, and have need of nothing” (Rev. 3:17).

Perhaps the time is soon coming when we will be “refined by fire”, and many more will be called to salvation.
I do not believe that it is God’s will for Christians at this time to be “distracted” in a movement to keep His name attached to, or to reform, or preserve a government (kingdom) that is not His anyway. Petitions, and coalitions, and rallies, are a human response, and a “distraction” from the Work truly being done. Jesus, in His walk on this earth, never tried to reform the governments of His day. His attitude was to “render unto Caesar what is Caesar’s”. If it is of men, let men keep it! It was of no concern or consequence to Him. He was about saving individuals, and granting them citizenship into His Kingdom.

Ultimately the governments of this world will fall, to be replaced by the Kingdom of Heaven, where our citizenship and allegiance really reside.

“Then the seventh angel sounded: And there were loud voices in heaven, saying, ‘The kingdoms of this world have become the kingdoms of our Lord and of His Christ, and He shall reign forever and ever!’” (Rev. 11:15)

A Vision of the Coming Revival

(written from 12/27/99 through 9/20/00)

In the spring of 1995, God gave me a vision of the Second Coming of Christ.  Instead of being an actual event, He showed it to me in terms of the sweeping changes that will shortly take place in Christianity and in the preaching of the Gospel.

Part 1

“My sheep hear My voice, and I know them, and they follow Me” (John 10:27)

The vision began with a Guide (the Lord or an angel) taking me up onto a high mountain that overlooked the entire Holy Land and the surrounding areas during the time of Jesus’ First Coming.  I could see from the River Jordan all the way to the Island of Patmos in the Mediterranean Sea.  All of the land of Israel, including Judea and Samaria, to Asia Minor lay before me.  As I stood there in a state of wonderment, I noticed a little hill that seemed to stand out in the midst of all the land.  It was the Temple Mount at Jerusalem!  I eagerly took note of the Temple.  It was a rigid, firm building, with strong, stately walls, much like a well-respected and aged institution.  It seemed to proudly convey an existence of much pomp and highly-regarded tradition.  As I watched it intently, I noticed that there were many people clothed in religious apparel and robes going to and fro with such purpose and dedication, that I marveled at how busy the place was.  It was so busy with activity that I remembered thinking, as I looked down from my heightened perspective, that it reminded me of an anthill with all the busy ants clamoring to and fro to carry out their responsibilities.

As I watched I began to notice that even though it was such a busy place, there was absolutely no work being done!  Nothing was being accomplished!  I marveled at how much seemingly-important activity there was, and yet nothing was being done.  No fruits or productivity whatsoever!  Only busy activity!  Another thing that struck me as odd about the Temple was how dry it was!  In fact, all of Jerusalem and the surrounding regions of Judea and Samaria were like a desert.  The ground was sun-baked and hardened with no water or green grass anywhere to be found.

As I stood there watching, I began to realize that the Temple represented the institutionalized Church and organized religion!  As I stood there dumbfounded staring at the Temple, the Guide who was with me (whose face I never saw) turned my face with His hand and re-directed my attention to the left of the Temple Mount.  As I looked out across the dry, barren, flat land, out across a desert wilderness, way beyond Jerusalem, I noticed a small little river flowing through the desert.  I recognized it as the River Jordan.  Standing on the banks of the river, was a dingy-looking man with disheveled hair and shaggy clothes, yelling out, “Repent!  Make straight the paths of the Lord!”  I said to myself, ‘This is John the Baptist!’  It was then that I noticed that the heavens had been opened above John’s head, and a steady stream of water was pouring down upon John.  And it was by the power of this water that John the Baptist spoke his message!  In direct contrast to this, everything else was dry especially the Temple area!

I was amazed!  Instead of the heavenly water coming down upon the Temple Mount [the institutional Church], and from there gushing down over the Jews [representing the people of God], the Holy Spirit came down upon some “apparent nobody” out in a desert place in the wilderness!  I noticed how John didn’t go into the city of Jerusalem (or any other city for that matter) preaching, but rather as the Scripture says, “And there went out unto him all the land of Judea, and they of Jerusalem, and all the region round about Jordan…” (Matt. 3:5; Mark 1:5).  I marveled at how John the Baptist didn’t advertise or set-up huge revival meetings from city to city, but rather something (or more correctly, Somebody) drew the people to him!

It was at this moment while I stood there pondering this that I heard a booming voice ripple across the sky saying, “Just as I drew those animals which were to be saved to the Ark, so will I cause those out of every people which are to be saved to hear My voice!  Behold those which hear the voice of the Lamb!”  For the first time in my life, I noticed all the different denominations and classifications of men and women in the Bible that were led out into the wilderness by the Spirit of God to hear the voice of God and the instructions of God spoken through John the Baptist!  Luke 3:7 describes the people which were drawn to John the Baptist as “a multitude”!  There were Jews and Israelites, Pharisees and Sadducees, lawyers, publicans, soldiers, priests, Levites, prostitutes, rich people, poor people, and many others that went out to hear John preach the instructions of God and become convicted.  It is interesting to note here that He told them all to repent!  All of them – from the religious to the non-religious!  John’s job was to “turn the people of God to the Lord their God!” (Luke 1:16).

As I saw little handfuls of people coming from every different walk of life, and every different tribe and circumstance imaginable, coming from far and wide unto John, I was amazed.  They had nothing in common.  They didn’t look alike.  They didn’t dress alike.  And they didn’t speak alike.  But nonetheless, they all came.  United by one thing.  They all individually heard the voice of the Lamb calling them to John!  And when they got to John, He (God) told them to repent because the Lord was coming soon!

In the vision, as well as in Scripture, the only ones that I saw John the Baptist rebuke were those that came down from the Temple (the institutional Church).  They were the ones wearing the religious robes known as the Pharisees and the Sadducees.  He rebuked them for the same reason Jesus did – for they trusted in themselves that they were righteous and therefore, refused to repent!  By not choosing to communicate through those at the Temple, but rather choosing to speak through John in the wilderness, God clearly made it evident to me that He is at odds with the “Institutional Church” (the Temple), and that He calls for the Pharisees and the Sadducees (the leaders of the Temple) to repent!

Part 2

” . . . and you shall be witnesses to Me in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth” (Acts 1:8).

After I saw the people come from all different walks of life, and different tribes (fellowships) of men unto John to hear him speak by the power of God, I saw each man and woman who listened to him light up like a torch with a flame of fire above their heads.  This happened to every one of them. The only exception to this, of course, was the Pharisees and Sadducees in their religious robes who were not invited by God to be there in the first place!  Their religious robes symbolized pride and self-righteousness.  And as God says in His Word, He “resists the proud, but gives grace to the humble” (James 4:6).  As it says in the Scriptures, I saw John rebuke them by saying, “O generation of vipers, who has warned you to flee from the wrath to come?!  Bring forth fruits showing that you are of a repentant heart!” (Matt. 3:7-8).  It was interesting in the vision to note that the only reason that the Pharisees and Sadducees were there was to observe, discredit, and eventually oppose the Work of God.  Jesus even said about them that they were “willing for a little season to rejoice in his [John’s] light” (John 5:35), but eventually, they would reject him altogether.

As each believer was “lit-up” by the preaching of John, I saw them turn and leave.  They did not form a “click” or “church” around John, but rather they went out across the countryside carrying this light with them, back to their own communities.  As they went out across the land, the whole land began to turn a golden yellow. This glorious golden-yellow glow began to spread like wildfire wherever they went.  Curiously, as they left the Jordan River all lit-up, and reached Jerusalem, I saw a handful of others join them who had not heard the preaching of John but who were also lit-up.  Together, they set-out across the whole countryside headed towards Judea, Samaria, Galilee, and all of Asia Minor spreading the light wherever they went.  I recognized these “other lit-up ones” as the disciples and followers of Jesus during His life on earth.  However, there was no mention or reference in the vision to the birth, death or ministry of Jesus at all!  This struck me as very odd at the time, but little did I know, this was one of the most important points of the message which was going to be revealed to me at the end.

As I watched the believers multiply and the golden light increase over all of the land before me, I heard a thunderous voice proclaim, “As it is written, ‘And you shall be my witnesses, beginning at Jerusalem, throughout Judea, and Samaria, and unto the uttermost parts of the earth” (Acts 1:8; Luke 24:47-48). I also heard the voice say, “And as it is written, ‘They turned the whole world upside down!’”(Acts 17:6). Needless to say, I was amazed.  Here I was witnessing the first evangelistic campaign, as described by the Gospels and the Book of Acts, and God described it in the vision as having happened to the whole world, not just in the Holy Land and Asia Minor.  I was perplexed as I watched it unfold before me.

By the time that the voice had finished these statements, all of the land and the sky above the land were glistening with a bright golden light.  It was the most glorious illumination that I had ever seen.  In fact, I had to shield my eyes from it at one point when it reached its fullness over the land.  But strangely, almost as quickly as it had built-up, culminating into this magnificent shining, it suddenly changed and began to wane.  As the golden light began to dim, I suddenly looked up into the sky to try to see why the light was disappearing.  I noticed that way out in the sky, a dark black veil was coming towards the earth, blocking out the sun which was evidently causing the golden light with its reflection.  As the ominous veil reached the earth, I noticed that it set-up like an iron curtain just beyond the Island of Patmos where an old man sat writing by candlelight.  By this time, there was no light, except for the single candle by which this old man was sitting at a small table writing.

The Guide moved me in closer to look over the old man’s shoulder to see what he was writing.  I saw the words, “The Revelation of Jesus Christ” on the top of the page.  With amazement, I remarked, “It’s the Apostle John!”  As I watched, the old man finished his writing, ending with the words, “Even so, come, Lord Jesus! Amen.”  After he wrote these words, he laid the pen down and drifted off to sleep.  The light of the candle then went out, and I was left standing there in the dark because the black veil had completely stamped out the light of the sun.  I stood beside the veil which by this time had become a huge towering iron curtain.  It became an impenetrable wall, behind which I could not see.  I heard horrific screams coming from inside the wall, as if the people there were held in bondage with great distress and much torture and suffering.  Their cries chilled me to the bone, and I thanked God for not showing me the things behind the curtain.  At that moment, the visual part of the vision ended.  And I found myself standing in complete darkness, as if I were in a darkened theater and the curtains had just closed.

I stood there wondering what I had just seen.  Right before my eyes, I had literally seen John the Baptist preaching in the wilderness at the River Jordan; I had seen the Temple Mount and all of the seemingly religious fervor and activity surrounding it; the commissioning of the disciples and the acts of the Apostles; the spreading of the Gospel to the whole known world; and the writing of the Book of Revelation.  As I stood there in the dark pondering the meaning of all of this, I heard a great majestic voice boldly proclaim, “Behold! See my First Coming!”

I couldn’t believe it!  Jesus had just declared that everything that I had just witnessed that happened in the New Testament from Matthew to Revelation was considered by Him as His First Coming!  According to what He had just shown me in the vision, that meant that His First Coming actually took place over a period of roughly one-hundred years.  It began with the coming of John the Baptist and ended with the death of the Apostle John.  I had never thought of it this way before!  Jesus’ First Coming was therefore not a singular event in history as I had always considered it to be.  It would be more accurately described as a process or an unfolding that occurred over a certain period of time!  It became apparent to me, after the Lord had showed me this, that Jesus’ First Coming actually occurred in stages.  It occurred much the same way that the Book of Revelation describes His Second Coming as — like the peeling away of seals on a scroll with many different culminating layers.  Just like an onion, a scroll has many layers which need to be peeled away and revealed.  And even though it has many layers, we still would only consider it to be one onion or one scroll.  The same is true about the First Coming of Christ!

Perhaps, the most startling and astounding revelation of all is what the Lord said to me next!  I heard Jesus say, “Now know this!  My Second Coming will be like unto the First, only bigger and more glorious!  Everything that you have just seen will happen again, only bigger than it did the First time!  My First Coming was just a scaled-down model of My Second!”  When the Lord had finished speaking, the Holy Spirit began opening my mind and showing me the meaning and the depths of what Jesus had just said.  The Spirit continued, “Whereas you saw one John the Baptist, there will be numerous John the Baptists.  Instead of one Peter, and one Paul, there will be many Peters and many Pauls.  Instead of three-thousand souls added to the Church in one day, there will be th___ souls added to the Church in one day.”  I don’t know if He said “thirty-thousand, three-hundred thousand, three million, or thirty-million”. His voice diminished for a split second in that spot so that I could not hear or comprehend the actual number. Obviously, I wasn’t supposed to. But I knew in my spirit that it was a large number. As I pondered this, the ramifications of this revelation became astounding.

Perhaps the best way to relay this unfolding process of the Second Coming as it was given to me is to describe it in terms of “phases”.  In reading this, please understand that I did not receive this terminology from the Lord, and it should not be misconstrued as being anything other than a fallible human being’s shallow interpretation of a divine revelation.  My only goal in sharing this is to strengthen and encourage my fellow brothers and sisters, and perhaps, impart some measure of understanding of the magnitude and providence of our calling.

Part 3

” . . . the word of God came to John the son of Zacharias in the wilderness.  And he went into all the region around the Jordan, preaching the baptism of repentance for the remission of sins.” (Luke 3:2-3)

The first phase of the Second Coming, I will call the “John the Baptists phase”. Jesus told us that John the Baptist was the “Elijah” that was prophesied to come before His First Coming.  And Jesus said that “Elijah” will also come again and restore all things before His Second Coming (Matt. 17:11).  John the Baptist fulfilled the office of “Elijah” the first time.  But, Jesus’ Second Coming will be more glorious and bigger than the First.  Therefore, the work of the “Elijahs to come” will also be more glorious and far-reaching.

I was shown that just as the Work of God was being done by John the Baptist under the direct influence of the Holy Spirit in the “wilderness”, apart from the Temple or its organized membership, the same will be true in the future.  It will not be one worldwide organization or church heading up the Work of God or serving as the mouthpiece of the Holy Spirit.  But rather, individuals ordained by the Spirit of God, and not ordained by men, who will serve as witnesses and messengers.  God is going to speak, and now is speaking, to His people everywhere through them “to prepare a people for their God”.  These people will be called by God out of every nation, church, organization, race, and background.  They will become “a people which were not a people” (I Pet. 2:10). And God Himself will teach them, as was begun with the preaching of John the Baptist and culminated into the ministry of Christ and the Apostles.

Before John the Baptist, it had been approximately 430 years since the last word from God – that is, that we have record of in the Bible.  After the prophecies of Daniel and Malachi, during what is known as the Inter-Testament Period, it appears that there was a “famine of the word” as was prophesied in Amos 8:11.  Then, at the time appointed for the First Coming, God sent the Archangel Gabriel to tell Zacharias that the time had come that God would once again visit His people.  God would give Zacharias a son, which he was to name John, who would “go before the face of the Lord to prepare His ways; to give knowledge of salvation unto His people… and to give light to them that sit in darkness and in the shadow of death, and to guide our feet into the way of peace” (Luke 1:76-79).

It is interesting to note here that the people of God (children of Israel) were described by God as “sitting in darkness”.  It was prophesied that John would “turn many of the children of Israel [people of God] to the Lord their God” (Luke 1:16).  Notice that John’s primary responsibility was not to address the Gentiles (those outside of the House of God), but rather to call those who were Jews and Israelites (inside the House of God) to repentance.  When the word of God came down upon John the Baptist in the wilderness, he began to preach to the people of God the baptism of repentance for the remission of sins (Luke 3:2-3).  When Jesus came down from heaven as the Word of God, He too, began His ministry by telling the people of God to “repent and believe the gospel” (Mark 1:15).  And when the Holy Spirit came upon Peter and he began to preach to the people of God, he told them to “repent, and be baptized…  For the promise is unto you, and to your children, and to all that are afar off, even as many as the Lord our God shall call” (Acts 2:38-39).  Notice, in every case, that when the word of God came down, it was telling the people of God to repent!  In other words, the very people who should have been right with God, and who even thought that they were right with God, weren’t!  For as Jesus said, they “trusted in themselves that they were righteous” (Luke 18:9).

Part 4

“When He, the Spirit of truth, has come, He will guide you into all truth; for He will not speak on His own authority.  But whatever He hears He will speak. And He will tell you things to come.  He will glorify Me, for He will take of what is Mine and declare it to you.” (John 16:13-14)

The Spirit of God revealed to me through the vision that everything that was done the first time has its modern-day counterpart in these last days.  Consequently, the Jews and Israelites of Christ’s day represent Christians and “all who wear His name” today.  The land of Israel and Judea represent all of the Christian places were the people of God fellowship and congregate together (i.e. colleges, seminaries, church properties, etc.)  As was already mentioned, the Temple is symbolic of “the institutional Church” and its organized religion with all of its ceremonies and sacraments, hierarchies, and traditions.

New Testament synagogues are representative of the individual Christian churches, buildings, and places of worship today.  The different Jewish sects mentioned in the Bible such as the Pharisees, Sadducees, scribes, lawyers, Herodians, etc. represent the different denominations of Christianity today, all varying to some degree on their individual doctrines and beliefs, but nonetheless, all of them considered to be the people of God holding to the same basic tenets.

Another parallel that the Holy Spirit revealed to me is that the Sanhedrin, along with the Pharisees and Sadducees, symbolize the growing spiritual wall of religious opposition that will arise from the hierarchies within the House of God [institutional church] against the true Work and workers of God.  This opposition will occur much the same way that the Sanhedrin and their councils came against Peter and John, and the other apostles, Stephen, and the Apostle Paul.  In the beginning, during the preaching of John the Baptist, the self-righteous leaders merely observed and speculated.  However, when Jesus and the disciples began to spiritually “feed” the hungry and “deliver” the captive people of God, then the religious leaders quickly tried to discredit them, and finally, violently opposed them.  The same will be true today.

Right now we are at the beginning of the Second Coming of Christ, and once again, the Holy Spirit is coming down from heaven as it was prophesied.  “And it shall come to pass in the last days, says God, I will pour out of my Spirit… And on my servants and on my handmaidens I will pour out in those days of my Spirit, and they will prophesy [speak with the voice of God]” (Acts 2:17-18).  In other words, just as it was the first time, at Jesus’ First Coming, God poured out His Spirit upon John the Baptist first, and then later the Apostles, and they began to preach as witnesses.  Even so, now at the beginning of His Second Coming, which shall be more glorious than His First Coming, God has once again sent messengers to bear witness of the Light, and to also be burning and shining lights themselves, just as John was.  As was mentioned before, the self-righteous leaders at first rejoiced in John’s light for a season (John 5:35).  But later they rejected the true Light that John bore record of.  For it is written, “He [the True Light – Jesus] came unto His own, and His own received Him not.  But as many as received Him, to them gave He power to become the sons of God, even to them that believe on His name” (John 1:11-12).  Likewise, the self-righteous people today, who trust in themselves that they are righteous, will come face to face with the Spirit of God in these witnesses, and consequently, either be revealed as children of light or children of darkness.  Notice, that they are called “children” and not “adults“!  That is, they have not yet matured, and it has not yet been made known what they will grow up to be!  But the Spirit of God knows the future, and the Word of God “is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart” (Heb.4:12).  And in due time, it will be revealed who and what they are.

Jesus told them that they were willing to put up with John the Baptist for a little while, but they ultimately refused to do what he said, that is – repent!  And later, when Jesus preached to them, they as children of darkness endured Him for a little season trying to discredit Him, and then later their hate grew into conspiring against Him to destroy Him, and then finally when God allowed it, they killed Him!  Thus, they as children became adults of darkness as they matured in their wickedness, refusing to repent!  It started out as pride, envy, and self-righteousness.  Jesus was taking away their numbers, threatening their positions, releasing their captives, and rebuking them for their hypocrisy! And by what authority does He teach and do these things?! These are the thoughts that went through the religious leaders minds early on, until finally, as Jesus said, “When I was daily with you in the temple, you stretched forth no hands against me, but this is your hour, and the power of darkness” (Luke 22:53). And they took Him and killed Him!  And Jesus tells us that “the servant is not greater than his master. If they have persecuted Me, they will persecute you also” (John 15:20).  “Yea, the time is coming that whosoever kills you will think that he does God service” (John 16:2).

Part 5

“But you shall be named the Priests of the Lord; men shall call you the Servants of our God . . .” (Isa. 61:6).

The Holy Spirit revealed to me the prophetic parallels between the First Coming and the Second Coming in terms of phases which will take place in a consecutive order.  Firstly, God will send “John the Baptist types” who will tell all of those who have ears to hear to repent!  These “John the Baptists” will tell the people of God to “make straight the way of the Lord” because the Lord is about to come to the world through them!  These repentant Christians are actually going to be the very paths upon which the Lord chooses to come!  That is why the original John the Baptist said to the Jews of his day, “Prepare you the way of the Lord, and make His paths straight.  Every valley [lowly and humble person] shall be filled [lifted-up and exalted], and every mountain and hill [hierarchy and individual that exalts himself instead of God] shall be brought low [humbled]; and the crooked shall be made straight, and the rough ways shall be made smooth. And all flesh shall see the salvation of God” (Luke 3:4-6).  These “John the Baptist types” will turn the people of God back to the Lord their God, while rebuking those religious leaders who refuse to repent and who continue to hold their congregations captive.

These John the Baptist types will be like “plowmen” who are sent-in to plow-up the hardened soil and turn-over the sun-baked desert land for the “planting of the Lord” (Isa. 61:3).  They go into the “Master’s chosen fields” (symbolized by the Judean desert and the area surrounding the Jordan) and level the land, making it smooth and ready for planting.  “Give ear and hear my voice,” God says, “Listen and hear My speech.  When a farmer plows for planting, does he plow continually?  Does he keep on breaking up and harrowing the soil?  When he has leveled the surface, does he not sow caraway and scatter cummin?  Does he not plant wheat in its place, barley in its plot, and rye in its field?  His God instructs him and teaches him the right way” (Isa. 28:23-26).  After these plowmen (“John the Baptist types”) have done their jobs, they will be taken away, and next will come those who scatter and plant the seeds.  “Now after John [the Baptist] was put in prison, Jesus came into Galilee, preaching the gospel of the Kingdom of God” (Mark1:14).  In Matthew chapter 13 it is revealed that the seed that is sown is the message of the Kingdom of God.  This “scattering and planting of the seed” began with the ministry of Jesus and was continued by the Apostles.  This begins the next phase in the “process” of the Second Coming of Christ which I will call the “Apostle Peters phase”.

When John the Baptist was taken away and put in prison, Jesus came along and began scattering and planting the seeds of the Kingdom, and teaching His disciples to do the same.  It is interesting to note here that Jesus’ first recorded sermon was given to the great multitudes of people that followed Him “from Galilee, and from Decapolis, and from Jerusalem, and from Judea, and from beyond Jordan” (Matt. 4:25)  Notice that these are the same people that went out to hear John the Baptist speak (Matt. 3:5).  They were Jews and Israelites.  Jesus told them that they were “blessed” if they were in a state of “brokenness and humility”, and if they indeed realized that they were spiritually “poor” and “hungry”.  Because as He told them, they were about to be filled, comforted, and lifted-up by Him! (Matt. 5:1-12).  But how did they get to be in that state of brokenness?  Obviously they were convicted by the preaching of John the Baptist!  They were “broken” and repentant!  And now Jesus had come to “preach the gospel to the poor [in spirit], bind up that which had been broken, preach deliverance to those who were held captive, give sight to them which were blind, and set at liberty them which were oppressed” (Luke 4:18).  This same Scripture continues in Isaiah 61:2 “. . . to comfort all who mourn; to console those who mourn in Zion; to give them beauty for ashes, the oil of joy for mourning, the garment of praise for the spirit of heaviness; that they might be called trees of righteousness, the planting of the Lord, that He may be glorified” (Isa. 61:2-3).

As was mentioned before, I saw in the vision those that were convicted by the preaching of John the Baptist “light-up” and go forth from the River Jordan area carrying the light of the Gospel and the anointing of the Holy Spirit with them.  As some of them approached Jerusalem, I saw a group of other “lit-up and anointed ones” join them in their march across the land.  I recognized them in the vision as the disciples and apostles who had been with Jesus during His lifetime on earth.  Surprisingly though, throughout the entire vision, I didn’t see Jesus’ birth, ministry, or resurrection.  In fact, it seemed strange to me that this visual revelation would completely “skip-over” any part of Jesus’ earthly life.  I never even saw Him!  I found it strange that in revealing the parallels between the First Coming and the Second Coming, such as the work of John the Baptist, the commissioning of the Disciples, and the evangelizing of the continent, that the Holy Spirit didn’t even mention the life and death of our Savior.  I wondered why.  But the Holy Spirit has since made it known to me.  It was because Jesus only had to come once in the flesh to die for us (Heb. 9:24-28), and to show us the way by being our example – that is, to be “the Firstborn among many brethren” (Rom. 8:29).  Contrary to what some people might believe, Jesus will not be coming back to this earth in the flesh again!  Clearly, there are some things in the First Coming that will not be duplicated in the Second.

Part 6

“For as the earth brings forth its bud, and as the garden causes the things that are sown in it to spring forth; so the Lord God will cause righteousness and praise to spring forth before all the nations” (Isa. 61:11).

Speaking of the soon-coming time when all of the true believers [the Church] will be “lit-up and anointed” to be His witnesses, God says, “Arise, shine, for your light has come, and the glory of the Lord rises upon you.  See, darkness covers the earth and thick darkness is over the peoples, but the Lord rises upon you and His glory appears over you.  Nations will come to your light, and kings to the brightness of your dawn” (Isa. 60:1-3).  This prophecy, as well as many others, will come true during the second phase which I have termed the “Apostle Peters phase” of the Second Coming.  For it is written, “The desert and the parched land will be glad; the wilderness will rejoice and blossom.  Like the rose, it will burst into bloom. It will rejoice greatly and shout for joy. The glory of Lebanon will be given to it, the splendor of Carmel and Sharon.  They will see the glory of the Lord, the splendor of our God.  Strengthen the feeble hands, steady the knees that give way.  Say to those with fearful hearts, ‘Be strong, and do not fear, your God will come. He will come with vengeance, with divine retribution He will come to save you’.  Then will the eyes of the blind be opened and the ears of the deaf unstopped.  Then will the lame leap like a deer, and the mute tongue shout for joy.  Water will gush forth in the wilderness and streams in the desert.  The burning sand will become a pool, the thirsty ground bubbling springs.  In the haunts where jackals once lay, grass and reeds and papyrus will grow.  And a highway will be there.  It will be called the Way of Holiness.  [This is the straight and narrow path that John the Baptist talked about.]  The [spiritually] unclean will not journey on it.  It will be for those who walk in that Way.  Whoever walks this road, even if he is a fool, he will not go astray. No lion shall be there, nor any ravenous beast go up on it. It shall not be found there. But the redeemed shall walk there, and the ransomed of the Lord shall return and come to Zion with singing, with everlasting joy on their heads. They shall obtain joy and gladness, and sorrow and sighing shall flee away” (Isa. 35:1-10). And again, speaking of this same time, God promises, “For I will pour water on him who is thirsty, and floods on the dry ground. I will pour My Spirit on your descendants, and My blessing on your offspring. They will spring up among the grass like willows by the water courses” (Isa. 44:3-4).

During this time that I have termed the “Apostle Peters phase”, many of the people of God (redeemed Christians) both men and women will be used to witness throughout their communities the glory of God and His salvation.  They will go from house to house breaking bread and fellowshipping with one another daily.  It will literally be a replay of the New Testament where it says, “And all the believers were together and had everything in common.  Selling their possessions and goods, they gave to anyone as he had need.  Every day they continued to meet together in the temple courts.  They broke bread in their homes and ate together with glad and sincere hearts, praising God and enjoying the favor of all the people.  And the Lord added to their number daily those who were being saved” (Acts 2:44-47).  Their joy and jubilation will be so contagious and exciting that it will cause great euphoria and awe in all of those that see them, mainly the Gentiles (the un-believers).  Those that have never known God or His greatness will be drawn to this great Light which will come-up from His servants, both male and female.  “And on my servants and on my handmaidens I will pour out in those days of my Spirit, and they shall prophesy.  And I will show wonders in heaven above, and signs in the earth beneath; blood, and fire, and vapor of smoke.  The sun shall be turned into darkness, and the moon into blood, before that great and notable day of the Lord comes.  And it shall come to pass, that whosoever shall call on the name of the Lord shall be saved” (Acts 2:18-21).

The Lord showed me how quickly the light of His Gospel will spread like wildfire across the land.  While watching this in the vision, He reminded of when He spoke the parable about the Kingdom of God and how He likened it to yeast that when a woman takes it and mixes it into a large amount of flour, it quickly spreads and permeates the dough (Matt. 13:33).  I watched in amazement at what started out as single individual lights quickly grew into a huge fire lighting up the countryside spreading as far as I could see.  It literally seemed like it happened overnight!  I saw scores of people coming from afar to see the glory of the Light and to be joined unto it.

During this time of unprecedented growth, the “Apostle Peters phase” will quickly graduate into what I call the “Apostle Pauls phase”.  In other words, the main focus of the Gospel witness and the evangelistic campaign will quickly shift from the House of God [Christendom] to the unbelieving world, known in the Bible as “the Gentiles”.  It is important to understand that just like in the New Testament, the work and the ministries of the “Peters” and “Pauls” will overlap as they are/were contemporaries.  Remember that the Scripture says that “Peter was an apostle to the Jews, and Paul was an apostle to the Gentiles” (Gal. 2:7-8).  That does not mean that Peter did not preach to the Gentiles at all, or that Paul did not preach to the Jews.  The Scriptures are quite clear that both of them did indeed.  However, their commissions and primary ministries were to two entirely different categories of people.

Since the Second Coming will be like the First, it is important to consider the details that the New Testament gives us.  For example, after their training, the eleven disciples, along with Matthias who was added in Judas Iscariot’s place, were ordained by God to be “apostles” (Acts 1:25-26).  The word “apostle” means “one sent forth”.  These twelve Apostles were specially chosen by God and sent forth to preach the Gospel and to testify of Jesus (Acts 10:41-42).  But notice that Jesus specifically instructed these twelve apostles “not to go among the Gentiles or enter into any city of the Samaritans.  But go rather to the lost sheep of the House of Israel” (Mat. 10:5).  Even Jesus said at the beginning of His earthly ministry that He was not sent unto the Gentiles, “but unto the lost sheep of the House of Israel” (Mat. 15:24).  This is significant because salvation is offered to “the Jew first, and then to the Gentile” (Rom. 1:16; 2:9-10; Acts 13:46).  Remember the Scriptures say that “He came unto His own” first (John 1:11), and “judgment must begin at the House of God” first (I Peter 4:17).  In other words, God is going to clean-up His own yard first, and then clean-up the neighborhood

Part 7

” . . . a prophet is not without honor except in his own country and in his own house” (Mat. 13:57).

As was explained earlier, God showed me His Second Coming in terms of phases.  The first phase is that of the “John the Baptist types”. These individuals will be in most cases lightly-esteemed and not highly-regarded by men.  They will be considered by the established Christian community as “nobodies” – that is, for the most part they will be uneducated, poor, odd, lacking titles and degrees, the wrong skin color, strange, socially-unacceptable, and societal outcasts.  Remember that the Scriptures describe John as being “clothed with camel’s hair, and with a girdle of skin about his loins” and that his food was locusts and wild honey (Mark 1:6).  He was not dressed in fine linen or kingly attire (Luke 7:24-28), and he was considered by some to be a social outcast and/or demon-possessed (Luke 7:33). He was also considered to be somewhat of a “wildman” – that is, he did not conform to the religious leaders’ idea of what an anointed prophet of God should be like or look like (Luke 7:28-30; Mark 11:27-33).  Like their predecessor, these modern-day “John the Baptist types” will also be kept “in the deserts until the day of their showing unto Israel [the Church]” (Luke 1:80).  That is, they will be totally without honor and recognition amongst the people of God until the day that God reveals them.

After John is taken away, those who “come in the name of the Lord” – that is, “those whom the Lord sends”, will come preaching the Gospel of the Kingdom of God (Mark 1:14).  It is interesting to note here that since Jesus’ own people “received Him not” (John 1:11), Jesus prophetically warned them that they would not see Him again until they said, “Blessed is he that comes in the name of the Lord” (Mat. 23:39).  In other words, until His own people (Christians) stop rejecting those that the Lord sends, they will in no way see Him!  For He dwells in those that He sends!  That is why it is written, “O Jerusalem, Jerusalem, you that kill the prophets, and stone them which are sent unto you.  How often I would have gathered your children together, even as a hen gathers her chicks under her wings, and you would not!  Behold, your house is left unto you desolate.  For I say unto you, you shall not see me henceforth until you shall say, ‘Blessed is he that comes in the name of the Lord” (Mat. 23:39).  Remember, Jesus is the Lord!  He is sending His servants, the prophets, unto His people [Christians] right now, and they are not accepting them!  Jesus even prophesied that He would once again send His people prophets, wise men, and scribes, and that they would cause some of them to be put to death, scourged in their churches, and persecuted from city to city (Mat. 23:34).

Those “who come in the name of the Lord” will be those whom the Lord sends – in other words, “prophets and apostles”.  They will come preaching the “good news of the Kingdom of God” and will have the “testimony of Jesus” which is the spirit of prophesy (Rev. 19:10).  For God told us that His servants would prophesy in the last days (Acts 2:18).  The first wave of apostles that He will send will be like Peter and the rest of the eleven original apostles, only greater in number.  They will be sent into the “cities and villages throughout all Judea” beginning at Jerusalem.  Remember, as was stated before, Jerusalem and Judea spiritually represent all of the lands and places where the people of God or “Christians” congregate and dwell.  Remember that it says that Peter, filled with the Holy Spirit, stood up with the eleven on the day of Pentecost and said, “You men of Judea, and all you that dwell at Jerusalem, be this known unto you and hearken to my words… For the promise is unto you, and to your children, and to all that are afar off, even as many as the Lord our God shall call” (Acts 2:14-39).  This is how and when the “second phase” will begin.  The coming “Apostle Peters” and other apostles will be “endued with power from on high” (Luke 24:49), and then released upon the earth so to speak.  That is why Jesus said, “And you shall be witnesses unto Me both in Jerusalem, and in all Judea, and in Samaria, and unto the uttermost parts of the earth” (Acts 1:8).  This coming witness will once again begin at Jerusalem (spiritually speaking), and from there permeate around the world to all peoples as a witness (Luke 24:47-48), and then will the end come (Mat. 24:14).  It should be mentioned here that Jerusalem serves as a spiritual type.  In God’s Word, first comes the physical, and then comes the spiritual (I Cor. 15:46).  Instead of one physical Jerusalem as in the First Coming, there will be many spiritual “Jerusalems” all over the world during His Second Coming.  In light of this, it is also interesting to note that Jesus said to His apostles that they “would not finish going through the cities of Israel before the Son of Man comes” (Mat. 10:23).  Obviously, this prophecy wasn’t fulfilled during His First Coming!

In order to understand the sequence of events to come, it is important to have an overall perspective of the book of Acts.  For example, the book of Acts explains in inspired-detail how the work of God systematically progressed during the First Coming, and how the Gospel was ordained by God to deliberately and methodically move across the land in an inspired order.  The Scriptures are clear that God does all things decently and in order, and nothing of God is haphazard or left to chance.  Afterall, He is the Master-Builder and Great Creator!  He is very careful and deliberate in when and where the Gospel is preached and how it is revealed and witnessed to the world.  This is very easy to see in the Scriptures.  For instance, when Paul and Silas tried to enter Bithynia to preach the Gospel there, the Holy Spirit did not allow them to (Acts 16:7).  The Holy Spirit also refused them to preach in Asia, re-directing them instead to preach in Macedonia (Acts 16:6-10).  This meticulousness of God in regards to the preaching of His Gospel will also be apparent in these last days.

The “Apostle Peters”, as well as the other eleven Apostles, will be sent to the “Jews” [modern-day Christians], while the “Apostle Pauls”, “Barnabases’” and “Timothys” will be mainly sent to the Gentiles [those who aren’t Christians].  Just as the outpouring of the Holy Spirit began in the middle of the land of the Jews [Jerusalem], so will it happen right in the middle of the people of God again!  God will once again pour out His Holy Spirit upon His servants, both male and female, in a mighty way on that appointed day (Acts 2:18).  It’s important to notice in Scripture however, that this outpouring of the Holy Spirit didn’t happen all over the place.  It began only at Jerusalem, and from there spread across the world as God permitted it.  Likewise, when this second dramatic outpouring of the Holy Spirit begins again, it will only initially fall upon the congregation of true believers that will be dwelling amongst those who call themselves the people of God.  For instance, when the Holy Spirit came upon the one-hundred and twenty people [true believers] who were gathered together in the upper-room on the Day of Pentecost, this occurred right in the heart of the capital city of the people of God, that is, at Jerusalem.  This was by divine command!  God wanted it to be a witness to all of the people of God (Jews/Israelites) that bore His name, but didn’t truly believe on Him (Jesus).  That is why Peter stood up with the eleven other Apostles and said, “You men of Judea, and all you that dwell at Jerusalem… You men of Israel, hear these words… Let all the house of Israel know assuredly, that God has made that same Jesus, whom you have crucified, both Lord and Christ” (Acts 2:14-36).

Upon hearing these convicting words of Peter, Scripture states that these same men (Jews and Jewish converts) were pricked in their hearts, and they asked Peter and the other Apostles what they should do.  Notice that Peter instructed the “people of God” to repent!  And about three-thousand of them did!  These people were all Israelites and Jews — the very people of God who wouldn’t receive Him and rejected Him at the beginning (John 1:11).  Notice that now these new repentant Jewish believers were continuing in the teachings of the Apostles, eating and praying with them, fellowshipping with them, and daily meeting with them in the Temple! (Acts 2:41-47).  Remember that it wasn’t but a few short months earlier these same Jews were some of the very ones who were trying to have the Apostles arrested along with Jesus (see Mark 14:50-52; John 18:10-27). But now, by the mercy and power of God, they have been converted!

A short time later, after this initial miraculous outpouring and witnessing of the Holy Spirit on the Day of Pentecost, Peter and John healed a lame man at the Temple and all of the people of God saw it (Acts 3:8-12).  Afterwards, Peter again said, “You men of Israel… the God of our fathers has glorified His Son Jesus whom you delivered up and denied in the presence of Pilate… Repent you therefore, and be converted, that your sins may be blotted out… For you are the children of the prophets and of the covenant which God made with our fathers… And unto you first God, having raised up His Son Jesus, sent Him to bless you, in turning away everyone of you from his iniquities” (Acts 3:12-26).  Notice that about five-thousand more Jews and Israelites then repented and believed! (Acts 4:4).  Again, on the very next day, Peter filled with the Holy Spirit said, “You rulers of the people, and elders of Israel… be it known unto you all, and to all the people of Israel…” (Acts 4:8-10).

Notice that for the first eight chapters of the Book of Acts, no preaching of the Gospel was done outside of Jerusalem.  There was good reason for this!  It’s very clear from the Scriptures that God wanted this witness of the Gospel to first begin at Jerusalem, right in the very midst of the people of God, those very ones who are called by His name!  Just as He declared He was going to do by the mouths of His holy prophets. He humbled them!  He surprised them!  Yes, He confounded them in their own self-righteousness!  For God had declared through His prophets that He was going to do this, saying: “Behold, you scoffers! Wonder and perish!  For I will work a work in your days, which you will not believe, even though a man declares it unto you!” (Hab.1:5; Acts 13:40-41).  The people of God (Jews/Israelites) didn’t even recognize that God had been working in their midst!  And in their blindness and hardness of heart they killed the very One that God had sent unto them to give them life!  In fact, God did such a thorough job in confounding and witnessing to His own people, that it’s interesting to note what the Jewish rulers and the chief priests unknowingly confessed regarding this incredible beginning witness.  They said, “What are we going to do with these men?  Everybody living in Jerusalem knows they have done an outstanding miracle, and we cannot deny it!” (Acts 4:16).  And again they unknowingly professed, “Did we not straightly command you [Apostles] that you should not teach in this name [the name of Jesus]!  Behold, you have filled Jerusalem with your doctrine, and intend to bring this man’s blood upon us!” (Acts 5:28).

Part 8

“Jesus said to her [the Samaritan woman], ‘Woman, believe Me, the hour is coming when you will neither on this mountain, nor in Jerusalem, worship the Father” (John 4:21).

After this initial surprise witness in Jerusalem to His own people, and the subsequent repentance of “those who are to be saved” (Acts 2:47), it will be time for God to continue His witness throughout all of Israel, both Judea and Samaria (all of Christendom).  As was mentioned before, Israel spiritually represents all of the places where Christians around the world fellowship and congregate.  This is not as much referring to the geographic locations and lands, as it is to the different specific places and denominations where Christians dwell and fellowship together.  In Jesus’ day, the southern part of Israel was known as Judea.  It was the area in which a great number of zealous Jews lived, and was considered by its inhabitants as the land of the “true chosen people of God”.  Jerusalem was its capital city, and it was considered by the Jews and Israelites that lived there as the place where the “pure” people of God dwelt.  These staunchly orthodox Jews and Israelites worshipped God according to the strict traditions of their forefathers, and were very zealous towards the keeping of the Law that Moses gave them.  They despised all other non-Israelite inhabitants in their land such as the Romans and Greeks, and considered such intruders as spiritually and ethnically “unclean”.

Although the Jews and Israelites for the most part hated foreigners to be in their land, no other group of individuals was more despised by them than the “Samaritans”.  The Samaritans were considered by the Jews to be “counterfeit Jews” or “pretend Israelites”.  The Samaritans were the inhabitants who lived in the land of Samaria which was formerly the name of the capital city of the Northern Kingdom of Israel, but by Jesus’ day, had become the name of the entire northern region itself.  To properly understand the prophetic meanings of the many references in the New Testament to “Samaria” and “Samaritans”, as well as the spiritual identity of the “Samaritans” today, it is first necessary to understand a little bit of the history given to us in the Bible about the Samaritans and their peculiar relationship to the Jews.

As most students of the Bible know, the nation of Israel was divided in two after the death of King Solomon in approximately 930 BC.  The ten northern tribes seceded from the union to form an independent nation known in the Bible as the Northern Kingdom or “Israel”, while the two remaining tribes became known as the Southern Kingdom or “Judah”.  The capital of the Northern Kingdom was Samaria, and the capital of the Southern Kingdom remained Jerusalem.  Because of their continual national sins, the Northern Kingdom of Israel was taken away into slavery by an invading Assyrian army around 721 BC.  The Assyrians commonly used a military tactic of “transplanting captives” from one conquered land to another.  Thus, the surviving Israelites of the Northern Kingdom were carried out of their land and scattered throughout all of the lands and nations that the Assyrian Empire had conquered never to return again.  This is how the Northern Kingdom became known in history as the “Lost Ten Tribes of Israel” or the “Diaspora” (“dispersed”).

After the Northern Kingdom of Israel was taken away, the Assyrians brought other captives in from different pagan nations to inhabit and re-settle the northern land of Israel which by this time was being referred to as Samaria after its original capital city.  Upon entering the land, these new settlers were attacked by lions that God had sent against them because “they didn’t fear the Lord” (II Kings 17:25).  Therefore they spoke to the king of Assyria, and he commanded that one of the captive Israelite priests be sent back to teach these new inhabitants of Samaria (the “Samaritans”) the way to worship the true God of Israel.  But as the Bible states, “They worshipped the Lord, but they also served their own gods in accordance with the customs of the nations from which they had been brought.  To this day they persist in their former practices” (II Kings 17:33-34).  The Bible goes on to explain in II Kings chapter 17 how the Samaritans mixed their pagan idolatrous practices in with the true worship of God.  It explains how they didn’t keep the Law of God or His commandments, statutes, and ordinances, as God had delivered them unto His people Israel, but rather, worshipped God according to their own pagan practices, traditions and customs.  This kind of “tainted-worship” by the Samaritans towards the God of Israel was abhorred by the Israelites from the Southern Kingdom of Judah, who were now called “Jews”.

About 135 years later, around 587 BC, the Southern Kingdom of Judah was taken into captivity by the Babylonians because of their national sins.  The Lord kept them in Babylon for seventy years as slaves just as He said He would do by His holy prophet Jeremiah.  Afterwards, God raised-up Cyrus, the King of Persia, to authorize and commission the re-building of the Temple at Jerusalem which had earlier been destroyed by the Babylonians (II Chron. 36:14-23).  When the Jews began re-building the Temple at Jerusalem by the decree of King Cyrus, the Samaritans came down from the north and said, “Let us build with you, for we seek your God as you do.  And we have been sacrificing to Him since the time of Esarhaddon, King of Assyria, who brought us here” (Ezra 4:1-2).  But the Jews rejected them saying, “You have no part with us in building a temple to our God.  We alone will build it for the Lord, the God of Israel” (Ezra 4:3).  Upon hearing this, the Samaritans became offended, and from that day forward continually tried to thwart and obstruct the building of the Temple and its subsequent worship therein.  This conflict and resulting hatred would exist on both sides all the way down through history until the time of Jesus Christ and His Jewish Disciples over five-hundred years later.

After reviewing the above given history, it is relatively easy to see why Jesus’ Disciples were amazed that He, being a Jew, would stop and talk to a Samaritan woman (John 4:27).  For as the Scripture says, “the Jews have no dealings with the Samaritans!” (John 4:9).  By Jesus day, this contention and hatred had become so great on both sides that when Jesus as the Jewish Messiah was headed for Jerusalem to be crucified, He had to pass through a Samaritan village, but the Samaritans there rejected Him simply because He was headed to Jerusalem!  Consequently, two of His Jewish disciples, James and John, straightway asked Jesus if they could destroy the Samaritans in the name of God (Luke 9:51-56)!  It is also interesting to note that Jesus speaking to a Jewish leader purposely portrayed a “Samaritan” in a better light than his Jewish counterparts in a parable about loving your neighbor as oneself (Luke 10:25-37).  Surely, this must have been a startling and offensive concept for this Jew to consider!  Needless to say, there was much “bad-blood” between these two religious groups of people that both claimed to be truly worshipping the same God of Israel.  And as we shall see, this conflict between the two “Houses of Israel” is both prophetic and relevant for our day.

In John chapter 4 a remarkable revelation and prophecy is given by Jesus to a Samaritan woman regarding this difference in worship between the Jews and the Samaritans.  After having just received a personal word from Jesus, the woman exclaimed, “Sir, I perceive that you are a prophet!” (John 4:19).  Immediately after proclaiming this, the Samaritan woman proceeded to address the obvious issue and question between them regarding this conflict and competition between their two peoples in their particular worship towards God.  She said, “Our [Samaritan] fathers worshipped in this mountain [Mt. Gerizim in Samaria]. But you [Jews] say that in Jerusalem is the place where men ought to worship” (John 4:20).  Jesus then gave her an astonishing reply and prophesy.  He said, “Woman, believe Me, the hour is coming when you will neither on this mountain, nor in Jerusalem, worship the Father.  You [Samaritans] worship what you don’t know [or have knowledge of].  We [Jews] know what we worship. For salvation is of the Jews” (John 4:21-22).  As was mentioned earlier, the Samaritans worshipped God; however, not according to knowledge.  They didn’t understand the plan of God or His ways as revealed in the Law of Moses through the sabbaths, holy days, sacrifices, offerings, and statutes.  When it came to worshipping God, they didn’t worship Him according to the commandments, ordinances, customs and traditions that God had set in place in the Law of Moses, but rather according to their own pagan customs and practices.

Herein lies the revelation of the Lord to me concerning the Jews of Judea and the Samaritans of Samaria:  Collectively, they represent all of Christendom today. The Judean Jews represent Christians who seek God according to the keeping of the Law.  That is, through the works of the Law.  They practice the Law of Moses and/or legalism to one degree or another out of a genuine zeal towards God.  However, by doing so, they clearly go about trying to establish their own righteousness by works, and consequently, “have not submitted themselves unto the righteousness of God” which is by faith (Rom. 10:1-5). Because of their zealous obedience to the oracles of God given to Israel, they, like the Jews of Christ’s day, completely misunderstand the supremacy and role of Jesus Christ.  They, in a sense, begin serving days, sabbaths, rules, regulations, and rituals, instead of serving Christ; which in itself can become a form of idolatry.  Jesus Himself said, “Follow Me!”  He did not say, “Follow the Law or the commandments that I gave to Israel in the Old Testament”.  In fact, the strict observance of the Law can become an end unto itself, instead of a means to an end, which was the Law’s original intent; to point-out to its adherents that they needed a Savior to come and save them from their sins!  For as the Bible says, “Sin is the transgression of the Law” (I John 3:4) and “all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God” (Rom. 3:23).  Therefore, all are condemned to die, because “the wages of sin is death” (Rom. 6:23).  These “Jewish Christians” forget that the Bible clearly states that “Christ is the end of the Law for righteousness to everyone that believes” (Rom. 10:4).  They also do not understand that it is by grace that we are saved (Eph. 2:8), and not by what we do or don’t do.

The Samaritans, on the other hand, represent the majority of Christians today who worship God by faith, but not according to His Word.  They pollute their worship of God with idolatrous practices and vain customs of men.  A clear example of this, would be the celebrations of Easter and Christmas.  As most historians know, these two “holidays” [holy days], as well as many others like them, do not have Christian or Biblical origins, but rather have their roots in paganism.  Both of these celebrations were originally observed in honor of the sun by the idolatrous pagans.  Politically-motivated “religious” men in the fourth-century A.D. “christianized” them in order to increase the number of converts from paganism to Christianity for political reasons.  Rather than appear to be “Judaizing” by celebrating the God-ordained holy days instituted in the Bible (see Lev. 23), these contemptible “church leaders” simply took widely-popular pagan celebrations and re-named them in “honor” of Christ.  Most Christians today simply don’t realize that Christmas trees, Easter eggs, yule logs, hot-cross buns, Easter bunnies, sunrise services, and the like, are all just the modern-continuation of these ancient pagan customs that God hates (Deut. 12:29-32).  The Scriptures say that God is holy, and that we who worship Him must be holy also (I Peter 1:15-16).  And He insists that there be a clear distinction between that which is holy from that which is unholy (Lev. 10:10).

Part 9

“But the hour is coming, and now is, when the true worshippers will worship the Father in spirit and in truth.  For the Father is seeking such to worship Him” (John 4:23).

As was stated before, Judea and Samaria represent the whole of Christendom today.  In other words, on the one hand you have the “Judean Christians” who have the proper form of worship, but who do not necessarily have faith in God through Jesus Christ.  They, for the most part, have the “form” (truth), but lack the “substance” [spirit].  In fact, they tend to know more about the Law of Moses and the works of the Law than they do about Jesus Christ and the justification that we receive by believing in Him.  These “Jewish Christians” need to remember the words of the Apostle Paul when he said to the Jews of his day, “Be it known unto you therefore, men and brethren, that through this man is preached unto you the forgiveness of sins. And by Him all that believe are justified from all things, from which you could not be justified by the Law of Moses” (Acts 13:38-39).  On the other hand, you have the “Samaritan Christians” who believe in God and the Lord Jesus Christ and worship Him in faith from their heart.  However, they worship Him in ignorance of His holy ways, substituting their own pagan practices and traditions in place of the ordinances that He gave to us in His Holy Word.

The Apostle Paul does speak of an advantage that the “Jewish Christians” have over the “Samaritan Christians” in that they have the oracles of God and the heritage of Israel (see Rom. 3:1-2; Rom. 9:4-5).  In other words, they have the priceless supernaturally-revealed knowledge and righteous judgments of God that He gave to His people Israel.  For as it says, “For this is your wisdom and your understanding in the sight of the nations which shall hear all these statutes and say, ‘Surely, this great nation is a wise and understanding people’. For what nation is there so great, who has God so near unto them, as the Lord our God is in all things that we call upon Him for? And what nation is there so great, that has statutes and judgments so righteous as all this Law which I set before you this day?!” (Deut. 4:6-8).  As one of these “Jewish Christians” who served the Law for most of my life, I can honestly say that the Law has given me an understanding and appreciation of the overall plan of God as revealed in the keeping of His holy days, His sabbaths, and the Old Testament laws, that I don’t believe most of my “Samaritan” brothers have today.  However, like the Apostle Paul, I too, was guilty of fighting against the Lord Jesus and not submitting to the righteousness of God, by going about trying to establish my own righteousness by keeping the Law.  And I now realize, like Paul, that “there is none righteous, no, not one. There is none that understands. There is none that seeks after God. We have all gone astray. We have all together become unprofitable. There is none that does good, no, not one” (Rom. 3:10-12).  For God has concluded all under sin (Gal. 3:22).
Herein then is the meaning of Jesus’ prophecy to the Samaritan woman regarding the “true worshippers that the Father seeks” (John 4:23).  Today, both sides of His House (Judea and Samaria – hence all of Christendom) think that they are right with God, and that they specifically are worshipping the God of Israel correctly.  This is exactly the same issue and argument that the Samaritan woman set forth to Jesus regarding worshipping at Mt. Gerizim or worshipping at Jerusalem.  Remember that worshipping at Jerusalem was commanded by the Word of God (Deut. 12:1-14), but that the worship at Mt. Gerizim was substituted by the Samaritans because they wanted to worship God, but were rejected by the Jews because they mixed-in paganism.  Therefore, Jesus in a sense said this to the Samaritan woman: “The Jews worship God in truth, according to the Word of God, but they do not have a heart for God.  They do not worship Him because they want to, but rather because they have to, because He commanded it!  You Samaritans, on the other hand, worship God because you want to, for you have a heart to worship Him.  However you do not worship Him according to Truth.  For God’s Word is Truth (John 17:17)!  Your words and your ways are not the truth.  But His Words and His Ways are Truth!  Behold, the time is coming, and now is, when the true worshippers of God will worship Him both in spirit [from the heart] and in truth [according to the Word of God].” Yes, there is coming a day when the people of God will again indeed worship Him in both spirit (by faith) and in truth (according to His Word)!  It is also important to notice here that Jesus said that this would happen twice. The first time was during His lifetime (His First Coming) when He said, “and now is”, and the second time is yet in the future (His Second Coming) when He said, “the time is coming”.  Again, the Holy Spirit is revealing what God is going to do in these last days.  He is going to cause both sides of His House to once again worship Him in spirit and in truth!

In these last days, God is going to again visit His people – that is, all of Christendom.  And He is going to thoroughly straighten us all out, both Jew and Samaritan!  For it is written, “And the Lord, whom you seek, shall suddenly come to His Temple [His people], even the messenger of the covenant whom you delight in… but who may abide the day of His coming? And who shall stand when He appears?… He shall purify the sons of Levi and purge them as gold and silver that they may offer unto the Lord an offering in righteousness. Then shall the offering of Judah and Jerusalem be pleasant unto the Lord, as in the days of old, and as in former years. And I will come near to you to judgment.  And I will be a swift witness against the sorcerers and against the adulterers… Even from the days of your fathers you have gone away from my ordinances and have not kept them. Return unto Me, and I will return unto you, says the Lord of Hosts” (Mal. 3:1-7).  Just as it happened to His people the first time, God is going to show-up again in a way that His people don’t expect and thereby confound them and humble them, and might I dare say, convert them!

An example of this surprise visit by God upon those who called on His name and their subsequent conversion and healing is relayed in a story given to us in the Bible.  When you read it closely the spiritual weaknesses being discussed here of both the Jews and the Samaritans become apparent.  But in this true story, only the Samaritan overcame his spiritual weakness and was healed.  In Luke 17:11-19, Jesus passed through the regions of Samaria and Galilee [Northern Israel] headed south on His way to Jerusalem.  As He traveled, ten lepers called out to Him to be healed.  Nine of the lepers were Jews and/or Israelites, and one of them was a Samaritan.  Jesus, testing them, said, ‘Go show yourselves unto the [Jewish] priests’ as was commanded in the Law of Moses (Lev. 13:2; Lev. 14:2).  Obviously, the Samaritan would have naturally had a problem with this because the Jews have no dealings with the Samaritans.  But as the story states, they all, including this Samaritan, obeyed God’s Word, and were healed.  This action of obedience to the Word of God must have been a “big step” for the Samaritan to have taken, but nevertheless, he faithfully did it.

On the other hand, to the Jewish/Israelite lepers, who don’t have any problem obeying the Word of God especially when it comes to keeping the Law of Moses, would not have had a problem with this command at all.  However, notice that when they were healed, only the Samaritan fell down and thanked God for His grace, that is, His free gift to them.  Only the Samaritan recognized that it was the free undeserved gift of God that healed him, and not his obedience to the Word of God!  The other nine Jews/Israelites didn’t feel like they owed any thanks to God for their healing.  Because afterall, they earned it by their obedience to the Law!  This is the “Jewish Christian’s” biggest problem!  They feel as though God owes them eternal life because they earned it!  By keeping the Law.  It’s not a free gift!  Salvation isn’t by the grace of God, they think!  It’s earned by the works of the Law and by their obedience to it, or so they think!  Like their Jewish counterparts in the New Testament, they don’t need Jesus Christ to save them!  They have the Law!  And if they keep the Law, then God is obligated to save them!  They don’t need Jesus. “For to him that works, his wages are not credited to him as a gift, but as an obligation – something owed to him!” (Rom. 4:4). “However, to the man who does not work, but believes on Him that justifies the ungodly, his faith is counted as righteousness” (Rom. 4:5).  And notice that this is exactly what Jesus said to the Samaritan: “Arise and go your way. For your faith has healed you!” (Luke 17:19).

“For they are not all Israel who are of Israel” (Rom.9:6).

Part 10

After the Lord visits and humbles His own House first (the whole House of Israel), that is, the House of Judah and the House of Samaria, He is going to then proceed to visit and humble the rest of the world (Gentiles).  For as it is written, “As I live, says the Lord, every knee shall bow to Me, and every tongue shall confess to God” (Rom. 14:11).  And “all flesh shall see the salvation of God” (Luke 3:6).

It is written that when the number of disciples in Jerusalem was multiplied (Acts 6:1), God scattered them throughout all of Judea and Samaria (Acts 8:1).  When this was accomplished, God then began to open the doors of the Gospel to the Gentiles (Acts 14:27).  However, as was mentioned before, the Gospel only went into each country and place when and where God determined that it was time to do so.  Eventually, it says that the disciples “turned the world upside down” (Acts 17:6).  God showed me that this will happen again.  Only this time it will happen to the whole world, not just Asia Minor!  This begins what I have termed the “Apostle Pauls phase”, when literally the whole earth will receive the witness of God.  Once again the Lord will send forth His “Apostle Pauls, Barnabases, and Timothys” with power and authority to witness to the whole world, and then the end will come (Matt. 24:14).  Many Gentiles will be grafted-in and added to the “Israel of God” (Gal. 6:16) virtually overnight.  This worldwide witness will occur in a very short time.  For it is written, “Though the number of the children of Israel be as the sand of the sea, only a remnant shall be saved.  For He will finish the work, and cut it short in righteousness. Because a short work will the Lord make upon the earth” (Rom. 9:27-28).  And again, it says, “This generation [that sees these things] shall not pass until all these things be fulfilled” (Matt. 24:34).

God did not specifically show me the order in which the cities and nations will be witnessed to.  However, He did show me how fast and how thorough it would be.  Just like it happened the first time, the preaching of the Gospel to the Gentiles will flourish in the mouths of God’s anointed.  “For so has the Lord commanded us saying, ‘I have set you to be a light of the Gentiles, that you should be for salvation unto the ends of the earth.’ And when the Gentiles heard this, they were glad, and glorified the word of the Lord.  And as many as were ordained to eternal life believed.  And the word of the Lord was published throughout all the region” (Acts 13:47-49).

” . . . and there shall be a time of trouble, such as never was since there was a nation even to that time.  And at that time your people shall be delivered, every one who is found written in the book” (Dan. 12:1).

Part 11

After the entire world receives this undeniable witness of the Gospel through the apostles’ preaching and the incredible miracles that will follow, the witness of the Gospel and the glorified Church will quickly subside and all but disappear from public view.  This brings me to the end of the vision where I saw a great dark veil begin to descend over the earth, blocking-out the light of the sun, and set-up as a large impenetrable iron wall upon the earth shortly after the death of the Apostle John.  In another similar vision that I was later given which seemed to expound upon this first original vision, I again saw a dark veil come towards the earth.  Only this time it did not set-up as an iron wall upon the earth, but rather, it completely covered the whole earth as an iron blanket.  Immediately after the whole earth had turned into a shining ball of glorious light, just as it had reached its full climax by and through the preaching of the disciples and apostles, it quickly began to wane, as this dark veil began to cover the whole earth completely stamping out the glorious light.  It was a dark and ominous veil which completely smothered the earth and all of its inhabitants.  Those trapped under the veil began to scream in horror and torment.  The black veil held a tight firm grip upon the entire earth.  Then thankfully, after a short time, I saw what looked like a clear smooth stone come from the Heavens like lightning and strike the oppressive iron veil and immediately it was smashed into pieces (see Dan. 2:28-45).

The Holy Spirit revealed to me that the oppressive veil that I saw in this latter vision was the same dark veil that I had seen in the earlier vision following the death of the Apostle John after he finished writing the Book of Revelation.  The only difference was that this latter veil was a lot bigger, and it didn’t set-upright as an impenetrable wall like the first one had, but rather, it covered the whole earth smothering it like a blanket.  As most Biblical scholars know, shortly after the deaths of the original apostles, false teachers motivated by greed and political gain “crept in unawares” and perverted the true Gospel of Jesus Christ (Jude 3-21).  They, along with their spiritual descendants, set-up a kingdom which lasted 1260 years (Rev. 13:5).  It called itself holy, but God called it the “synagogue of Satan” (Rev. 2:9).  It ruled over the lives of men and women and compelled them to bow down to a government which was not of God, and caused them to commit spiritual fornication and idolatry.  This kingdom, pictured as the dark veil in my first vision, became an imprisoning wall which instituted a system of compelled religion, void of faith and truth, masquerading and promoting itself as the House of God.  But in reality, it was really the church of Satan.  It completely stamped-out the light of the true Gospel, and caused the true Church of God to go into hiding for 1260 years as was prophesied to happen (Rev. 12:6).  The reason that this veil was presented as a iron wall in my first vision instead of an iron blanket (like my latter vision) was that it did not cover the entire earth, and it spiritually imprisoned men and women and held them in as captives.

Just as this first satanic kingdom drew its initial momentum and authority from counterfeiting the true apostolic Gospel witness of the First Coming, so the second satanic kingdom will do likewise.  Notice in history that the Holy Roman Empire only set-up its authority over those lands and places where the Gospel had first been witnessed.  It did not control the whole known world!  It only established its power over those places that had originally received the Gospel witness and the Word of God during the First Coming!  Likewise, this latter veil will do the same thing.  However, it will not be a retaining wall like I saw the first time, but rather, it will become an iron blanket which will cover the whole earth.  Why?  Because the whole earth will have received this Gospel message right before it happens!  “And this gospel of the Kingdom [of God] shall be preached in all the world for a witness unto all nations, and then shall the end come” (Matt. 24:14).  This is why the Holy Spirit refused to let the original Apostles preach the Gospel in Asia the first time.  It wasn’t time for them to receive the witness of God.  So Satan didn’t have to establish his counterfeit “holy empire” there either!

After God clearly witnesses His awesome saving power (salvation) and mercy (forgiveness through Jesus Christ) to all that will repent throughout the whole world, then Satan will be allowed to set-up this counterfeit “holy empire” once again.  Notice it says, “And I beheld another beast [kingdom] coming up out of the earth.  And he had two horns like a lamb, and he spoke as a dragon.  And he exercised all the power of the first beast [the Holy Roman Empire] before him, and caused the earth and them which dwell therein to worship the first beast, who’s deadly wound was healed.  And he will do great wonders, so that he will make fire come down from heaven on the earth in the sight of men, and he will deceive them that dwell on the earth by the means of those miracles which he will have power to do in the sight of the beast, saying to them that dwell on the earth that they should make an image to the beast which had the wound by a sword, but now lives.  And he had power to give life unto the image of the beast, that the image of the beast should both speak, and cause that as many as would not worship the image of the beast should be killed” (Rev. 13:11-15).

Once again, God’s “two witnesses” (the prophets and the apostles) will be sent to declare the judgments of God before many peoples, nations, tongues, and kings (Rev. 10:11; Rev. 11:3).  Revelation Chapter 11 explains that this great witness will last for three and one half years.  During this time of unprecedented supernatural anointing, God will give His servants power and authority over the elements.  Like Moses and Elijah, they will be able to turn water into blood and stop the rains from falling on the lands (Rev. 11:6).  After their testimony is finished, however, Satan will then be allowed to raise-up his dark veil (or image of the beast) which will then cover the whole earth for another three and one half years.  This is referred to in the Bible as the “time of the Gentiles” (Luke 21:24).  This will begin a time of intense persecution and martyrdom for the saints (Rev. 11:7-10).

Satan will once again use the excitement and overall sense of euphoria generated by the true witnesses of God to begin his deception.  Just as Jannes and Jambres used their satanic powers to duplicate some of the miracles of Moses, Satan’s ministers will once again transform themselves into ministers of righteousness, thereby deceiving many (II Cor. 11:13-15).  Jesus even warned that their demonstrations of power would be so spectacular during this time that even the saints themselves would be deceived if God allowed it (Matt. 24:24).  All of this is according to the Word and plan of God.  For it is written, “Concerning the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ and our being gathered to Him… don’t let anyone deceive you in any way.  For the day will not come until the rebellion occurs and the man of lawlessness is revealed, the man doomed to destruction.  He will oppose and will exalt himself over everything that is called God or is worshipped, so that he sets himself up in God’s Temple, proclaiming himself to be God… And now you know what is holding him back, so that he may be revealed at the proper time.  For the secret power of lawlessness is already at work.  But the one who now holds it back will continue to do so till he is taken out of the way.  And then the lawless one will be revealed, whom the Lord Jesus will overthrow with the breath of His mouth and destroy with the splendor of His Coming.  The coming of the lawless one will be in accordance with the work of Satan displayed in all kinds of counterfeit miracles, signs and wonders, and in every sort of evil that deceives those who are perishing.  They perish because they refused to love the truth and so be saved.  For this reason, God will send them a powerful delusion so that they will believe a lie, and so that all will be condemned who have not believed the truth but have delighted in wickedness” (II Thes. 2:1-12).

After this allotted satanic “time of the Gentiles” has run its course, God the Father will quickly send Jesus Christ in the visible fullness of His glory to put down all of the kingdoms of this earth and to set up His Holy Kingdom which will never end (Dan. 2:44).  “Immediately after the tribulation of those days shall the sun be darkened, and the moon shall not give her light, and the stars shall fall from heaven, and the powers of the heavens shall be shaken.  And then shall appear the sign of the Son of Man in heaven.  And all the tribes of the earth shall mourn as they see the Son of Man coming in the clouds of heaven with power and great glory.  And He shall send His angels with a great sound of a trumpet, and they shall gather together His elect from the four winds, from one end of heaven to the other” (Matt. 24:30-31).  “For the Lord Himself shall descend from heaven with a shout, with the voice of the archangel, and with the trumpet of God, and the dead in Christ shall rise first.  Then we which are alive and remain shall be caught up together with them in the clouds to meet the Lord in the air.  And so shall we ever be with the Lord” (I Thess. 4:16-17).

CONCLUSION

“Let two or three prophets speak, and let the others judge . . . For you can all prophesy one by one, that all may learn and all may be encouraged” (I Cor. 14:29-31).

This concludes what the Lord showed me in this vision and the subsequent revelations by the Holy Spirit concerning its interpretation.  I humbly submit this to my brothers and sisters in Christ, with both fear and trembling, realizing that our God is an awesome God, who alone knows the end from the beginning.  As is true in communicating any revelation from God to others, we must remember that He alone is perfect, and we are fallible.  Therefore I ask you, as the reader, to prayerfully and carefully consider these words.  I have sincerely tried to relay this message both accurately and boldly.  And yet, at the same time, I realize that we as humans “see through a glass darkly” (I Cor. 13:12).  I believe that God reveals to us these things by the Spirit so that we can all have hope and confidence that He indeed is in charge of all things, and that our individual callings are by His design and command.  I would remind all who read this and consider its message to do as the Bible admonishes us, “to receive the word with all readiness of mind, and search the Scriptures daily to see whether those things are so” (Acts 17:11).  May God be with us all.

Death Of A Vision – What Then??

By Jim W.

From: Revival List <prophetic@revivalschool.com>

The Lord brought revelation to me recently about a situation that I have been going through.  This revelation will encourage others…

I was powerfully saved at the age of 31, twelve years ago.  Ever since then, all I have ever wanted to do was serve God in ministry. It has been such a strong desire.  I believe it is the vision that God has placed in my heart for the remainder of my life here on Earth. Over the years I have taken every step I know of to make that vision become a reality.  I have helped out in local churches and ministries, I have gone to a small local Bible College, I have spent much time in prayer, praise, preparation and God’s presence. Everything in my life seemed to be on a slow path to fulfillment of my heart’s desire.

Then, all of a sudden, there was a change.  The ministry we were involved with encountered some serious self-inflicted problems, and the Lord led us to leave that ministry.  The Lord led us into a larger local church rather convincingly, but in the year and a half we have been there, it has become very apparent that I will never be allowed to do much there.  My heart became crushed and I sunk to the depths of hopelessness, believing that there had for some unknown reason been a death to the vision God had placed in my heart.  All I had ever wanted to do was serve God in ministry, and it seemed as though that was never going to happen.  Surely, I must have done something to disqualify myself.  I had forgotten the scripture that says the “giftings and callings of God are without repentance” (Rom.11:29).  My heart was broken.

A few weeks ago I was watching a teaching video by a well known pastor.  He was talking about Abraham and Isaac.  God had promised that Abraham would be the father of many nations. Then, all of a sudden, God asks Abraham to offer up Isaac as a sacrifice.  Abraham’s vision was about to encounter a sudden unexpected death.  At that moment, the Lord spoke to me and simply said, “Death to a vision sometimes only appears that way.” I asked Him what He meant by that and immediately He brought to my remembrance a number of situations in the Bible that explained exactly what He meant.  It is so encouraging!
Each situation follows a similar pattern.  Various people in the Bible had some idea of the vision/calling for their life.  Each began taking steps toward it. Each had some unexpected occurrence that brought death to their vision. Sometimes God brought about the occurrence.  Sometimes it came as a result of other people’s actions. Sometimes it came because of mistakes the person made themselves.  In every case, there was a period of time (like Lazarus in the tomb), and then God resurrected the vision/calling and fulfilled His plan for that person’s life.  The death of the vision was not what it appeared to be.

God told Abraham to offer up Isaac. Abraham obeyed and God provided a substitute sacrifice, sparing Isaac. Abraham went on to become the father of many nations.

Joseph had dreams of the sun, moon, & stars bowing down to him. He knew he would be a leader over his family.  Suddenly, he was sold into slavery and even ended up in prison.  Many years later, God brings him out of prison and makes him ruler over all Egypt, fulfilling the dreams that had apparently died.

Moses knew he was born to help his people (Acts 7:23-29).  He came to the defense of a Hebrew slave and killed an Egyptian.  He had to flee for his life.  He lived forty years in a foreign country and then God called to him from the burning bush, sending him back to Egypt to fulfill the call on his life.  Moses delivered Israel from Egypt.

Joshua spied out the promised land and knew they could overtake it.  He tried to convince the others but was unsuccessful.  The unbelief of the others caused him to spend forty years in the desert. God then chose him to succeed Moses and he led Israel into the Promised Land and took it.

David was anointed by Samuel as a young man to be king of Israel. He ended up in the palace playing music for Saul and becoming best friends with Jonathan. Suddenly,  David has to flee for his life because Saul is trying to kill him. Saul chased David for many years.  Finally, Saul died in Battle and David became king.
Jesus was known by His disciples to be the promised Messiah. The disciples had followed Him for 3 years, seeing the miracles and hearing the teaching.  They thought He would become king and rescue them from Rome.  Suddenly, Jesus was crucified and the disciples scattered. Three days later, He was raised from the dead.  Shortly thereafter, Pentecost came and they were all filled with the Holy Ghost and began their ministry.

There is a definite pattern here.  I believe there are many Christians out there that are going through the same thing.  God has placed an exciting vision in your heart.  You have taken steps in the right direction, but suddenly something came to bring an apparent death to the vision or calling upon your life.  At this moment, you may be hopeless or may have given up.

You are in good company – Abraham, Jacob, Joseph, Moses, Joshua, David, Paul, and the disciples of Jesus.  It would seem that this is the same pattern of many people that God has used in powerful ways throughout the ages.  Perhaps the vision God has for your life is much bigger than you realize, and there has to be an apparent death. Remember what God said, “Death to a vision sometimes only appears that way.”
The Lord has placed three scriptures on my heart regarding this. “Trust in the Lord with all of your heart and lean not on your own understanding.  In all of your ways acknowledge Him and He will direct your paths.” (Proverbs 3:5-6).   Romans 4:18-21 tells how Abraham never lost faith while he walked that long road on the way to sacrifice Issac.  He knew God would still do what He promised.  John 12:24 says that unless a kernel of wheat falls to the ground and dies, it cannot bring forth life.

May this encourage all of you as it has me.  May the Lord bless you and may He bring about all that is needed to fulfill the call of God on your life and the dreams He has put in your heart!

Christianity vs. Churchianity

7/19/97
by Eric Wheeler
eric@sharingtheway.com

Note from the moderator: I wrote this back in July of 1997. It was during this time that
the Lord was beginning to show me the spiritual poverty and dire condition of the whole
Church (all of Christendom). I am being moved by the Holy Spirit now to begin sharing
these things with others; therefore I am publishing it on the internet via this website.

As each day passes, I am learning to hate organized religion. I feel that mankind, by
continually organizing himself into corporate bodies called “churches”, is failing to
remember that the word “church” simply means “called-out ones”. These “called-out
ones” collectively are the Body — the Body of Christ. They are already “organized” per se,
as they all adhere to one Master [Christ]; they all are taught by one Teacher [the Holy
Spirit]; and they all are expected to love others whether brother or neighbor. It is
therefore redundant, and a hindrance, I believe, to have “churches” within the Church.

I am of the firm belief that a person is either a Christian or they are not! Before God
there is no such thing as a Type A Christian, Type B Christian, Type C Christian, etc. It is
man who sets up denominations (or classifications) not God! As it is written, “Is Christ
divided?!” (I Cor. 1:13). I think that by setting up organizations and so-called “churches”,
men hinder the very work of the Holy Spirit. This happens in a number of ways:

1) By forming corporate groups, members cut themselves off from fellowshipping with the
whole body, and therefore miss out on learning from others who may have been given
certain gifts by the Holy Spirit for the edification of the whole body.

2) Members of corporate groups tend to become exclusionary in their thinking, which can
and does lead to an “us and them” mentality; which, ultimately, leads to self-righteousness
and self-centeredness. Membership can also lead to a false sense of
security. In that, members can feel that “membership=righteousness” and that “nonmember ship=unrighteousness”.

3) It doesn’t allow for variety and free-will thinking. When members cannot feel that they
can truly speak-out and be absolutely true to their feelings as God reveals things to them,
whether or not they conform to what is being taught, this is not being true to God, one’s
fellowman, or oneself. People tend to forget that God reads our thoughts and our hearts.

He reads us like an open book all of the time. And if a person is sitting in church and is
half-heartedly singing a song only out of conformity, and in his heart is saying “Why do
we have to sing this song? I think all this singing is stupid!” What good is it? Are we not
teaching ourselves to live a double life? To be hypocritical? And in some cases, to lie to
God and to our neighbors? As the scripture says, “Thou shall not lie.” And again, it says
“Blessed are the pure in heart.” Those who speak with a pure heart cannot lie – neither to
God, nor to themselves.

4) Corporate groups need to have some sort of “church government” in place in order to
establish and maintain control over its members. It is the only way for it to survive as an
organization. However, this can lead to conformity (not unity), and in time can cause
members to focus on the mandates and commandments of the church and not necessarily
those of Jesus Christ. Also, the church government can erroneously be viewed as being
the “Pipeline from God”. That is, members rely on the church (men) to teach them,
instruct them, and dictate to them what God wants them to know. Instead of going
directly to God and to His Word [the Bible] and asking God to speak to us and instruct us
by His Spirit, we do the same thing that the unbelieving Israelites did when God tried to
speak to them. They said, “You speak to us, Moses, and we will hear. But let not God
speak to us.” (Exod. 20:19). I think sometimes that we fail to remember that God gives
us His pure Words of Life. Why do we think that it has to be filtered through fallible
corruptible human-beings first in order to be digested?! God says, that “man does not
live by bread alone, but by every word that proceeds out of the mouth of God.” He also
tells us that we don’t have to go to man to learn what is right and wrong and how to live.
He gives it to us. For “all Scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for
doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness: that the man of God
may be perfect, thoroughly furnished unto all good works” (II Tim.3:16-17).

I believe that it is only hindering the Holy Spirit’s work when men set up organized
churches. The New Testament shows us that the Holy Spirit inspires different individuals
to stand up and prophesy. This word “prophesy” simply means “to speak under the direct
influence of the Holy Spirit” which is given to edify the whole congregation. Thus showing
that God is directly teaching His people. As it is written, “And they shall all be taught of
God” (John 6:45). Now that we have the New Covenant, and the Law has been written in
our hearts, God says, “They shall no more teach every man his brother saying, ‘Know the
Lord’: for they shall all know Me, from the least of them unto the greatest of them” (Heb.
8:11; Jer.31:34).

After having explained the various gifts of the Holy Spirit, the Apostle Paul told us in I
Cor.14:1 that we should “earnestly desire spiritual gifts, especially the gift of prophesy –
that is, to interpret the divine will and purpose in inspired preaching and teaching”
[Amplified Version Bible]. He went on to explain that he who prophesies speaks to men
for their edification, exhortation, and comfort. And that he wished that all of them in the
congregation had the gift of prophesy so that the whole congregation would be edified.
Paul explained that it is much better to have the gift of prophesy than the gift of tongues,
because when someone prophesies it can be received and understood by the whole
congregation. But when someone speaks in an unknown tongue, only those who know
the language can understand. He then gave instruction to let all those that have the gift
of prophesy speak one by one in an orderly fashion that all may learn, and all may be
comforted.

Unfortunately when men set up churches each having their own hierarchical governments,
the gift of prophesy is severely limited. The Spirit of God is restricted and only permitted
to inspire the pastor or ordained elder. And of course, if and when this happens, the
pastor or elder can only relay to the congregation what he comprehends or understands.
(In these cases, it is hoped that the minister has the gift of prophesy. Otherwise, he is
only speaking the wisdom of man and not the things of God!) The Spirit of God is
therefore suppressed and is no longer free to empower a number of individuals to stand
up and speak what the Holy Spirit has enabled them to see and understand. Thus, the
growth of the whole congregation is stunted.

When the Holy Spirit is not squelched, and is free to move around and flow through
individuals, it is amazing to see what mysteries of God are manifested. Because each
Christian is a different vessel, with a different background and set of circumstances, he or
she becomes a unique and special conduit for the Spirit of God to flow through to others.
Each Christian conduit reveals a different facet and gives a unique perspective which
ultimately gives us collectively a clearer picture into the mysteries of God. No man has
the “corner on God”. For who can understand His ways or His thoughts?! But by His
Spirit each of us can understand and relay a little here, a little there, a precept here, a
precept there (Isa. 28:10), until we all can see the fullness of His glory.

I believe that Christians should freely fellowship and congregate. I do not think that it is
wise to belong to any one certain denomination, sect or church. To do this, I feel, would
be a great hindrance to not only one’s own spiritual growth, but to others as well. We
have been called by our Lord to go out and preach the gospel to every living thing — not
sit around with those who happen to agree with every doctrine, principle, teaching, and
perspective that we have. I am by no means telling people to stop fellowshipping on a
regular basis. I am simply drawing attention to the fact that Christianity does not equal
“Churchianity”. It is my prayer that we all stop trying to bring people into our
“fellowship”, and start reaching out to others in fellowship!

A New Young Christian Speaks Out

Note from the moderator: This article was written by a young man who is a recent convert and new believer. As I read his submission I could hardly believe what I was reading! I realize that some “older” Christians might think his article is a bit “spiritually immature”, over-simplified, and/or “rough around the edges”. But the
more that I got to thinking about it, the more I began to realize that isn’t this exactly what Christ meant when He said to the older church generation of His day that “new wine must be put into new wineskins” (Mark 2:22)? God is calling a whole new generation of “young” people that seemingly don’t “fit the mold” of Christianity, or should I say, rather, “Churchianity”.
Sometimes, I think that we, older Christians, are too conservative and reserved in our thinking, and we forget that Jesus was actually looked upon by the church-goers of His day as a “revolutionary” and/or “rebel”. He and His disciples did not act like the pious religious church-people of the first century. In fact, that is why the “church leaders” had such a problem with Him! I am not saying that I necessarily agree with everything that David has written below, but rather, I think that it is very refreshing to see such a hunger and a real thirst (Godly zeal) developing in him by the Spirit of God to CHANGE THE WORLD by introducing them to His Truth and by demonstrating to them the life-changing love of God which this world so desperately needs Afterall, isn’t this what Jesus meant when He said, “For the people of this world are more shrewd [clever and astute] in dealing with their own kind than are the people of the light” (Luke 16:8). And He also said, “From the days of John the Baptist until now, the Kingdom of Heaven has been forcefully advancing, and forceful men [aggressive and edgy men] lay hold of it!” (Matt. 11:12). Truly, God is changing the face of Christianity and the Church! He is raising-up “warriors” to leave the church system and pews and to go out into the streets and into the dark alley ways to witness His love and His forgiveness to the people. For He said, “It is not the healthy who need a doctor, but the sick. I have not come to call the righteous, but sinners to repentance.” (Mark 2:17).

By David Shobe

Love is free. Value cannot be placed on love because love is invaluable. It is not a
commodity to be traded back and forth, and it is not something that should ever be
withheld. Love should not be controlled, love should be thrown about with reckless
abandon!

I am not talking about anything sexual. Sex is on a completely different level. I am
talking about L. O. V. E… The kind of love Jesus showed, and not just to believers, not
only to Christians. The kind of love He showed to EVERYONE!
Many “Christians” today hate gays, hate liberals, hate Muslims. I confess that until
recently, I did, too. Is this what Jesus would do? Heck no! Jesus loved everyone,
regardless of who they were, or are, or what sins they had committed.
It is not our place to judge, to say who’s wrong and who’s right. It is the Christian’s
place to follow Christ’s example. Aren’t we, as Christians, supposed to be striving to
emulate Him in every situation?

Truly, it is easier to hate, hate is of the Enemy, ruler of the world. God does not hate
anything save sin, and sin’s horrendous father, our eternal Enemy. Christians should
strive everyday, with all of their might, to eradicate hate from their hearts and minds.
Love your neighbor… Love everyone! Bring His Kingdom to life… Today! I am
writing this for myself as much as anyone else. I must remind myself that I am not
the most important in the world. The world does not revolve around me. I am not the
end all, He is.

Everything we do should be for the glorification of our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ.
Harboring pain, or judging others does not bring glory to Christ, it brings glory only to
our Enemy.

Are we, as Christians, going to be perfect in our Christ-emulation? Of course not,
we’re human after all. But is that a righteous excuse to give up? Does the fact that
sometimes we will get mad, or hurt mean that we should give up or not even try.
Absolutely not. God knows what is in each of our hearts, and if love is in our hearts,
how can we go wrong?

Just as God loves us as Christians, He loves the rest of the world, too, despite their
flaws, and despite ours as well. Why do you think it’s taking Him so long to return?
He wants to save as many of us as He can, and with the whole free-will thing, it’s
going to take a while. As hard as it may be to believe, God loves Osama bin Laden as
much as He loved Mother Teresa. As an American this is hard to accept, hard to
understand, I know. But Christian Americans do not have a stranglehold on God’s
love.

I have heard that for some it is too late to receive Christ, that some have done too
much wrong to be forgiven by Him. Do we know the heart of God? It isn’t for us to
judge “evil-doers.” That is a job for God, and God alone. Am I saying that if I ran into
Adolph Hitler on the street, I would ask him to my house for dinner? Actually I might,
think what the world may have looked like today had Hitler never gained control of
Germany. This sounds a little goofy, but what if someone had shown him some kind of
love or acceptance in his life? Would he have become the vile political figure he
became? Would he be known as the “Anti-Christ?” No, if he had been shown love and
acceptance, he wouldn’t have.

If you are filled with hatred, or if you have even a little bit of it in your heart, it will
consume your whole life. The good thing is, love can do the same thing. Love can
consume your whole life too, from just a little seed, it can grow, if nurtured. I don’t
mean the kind of love that most of us are used to, I mean the kind of love Jesus
showed everyone, unconditional love. If only everyone could understand this… If we
could all just let love rule, imagine how great the world could be. Imagine His
Kingdom becoming reality, right here, right now. It seems so impossible, completely
unattainable. I have to remind myself that through Him, all things are possible.
Heaven on Earth is possible through Christ Jesus. He has told us that He will one day
return to the world and reign forever. I believe that with all of my heart, as I’m sure
most Christians do, and I cannot wait for His return, but I’m talking about something
more tangible, something now. God’s Kingdom, now.

Little bits of His Kingdom are coming together right now, all over the planet. I’m a
good example of this phenomenon. Before I came to accept Christ as my Savior, I
was full of rage. Not to say that I am completely absent of rage, or pain, or self
addiction, but I am getting a lot better. Grace rules!

Sometimes, anger is righteous. Christians that make blasphemy of His word really tick
me off. How could the Good News Jesus spoke of be good news if it wasn’t for
everyone? He wants us all to get along, to set aside our differences and focus on our
similarities. If everyone could see this, and do it, we wouldn’t have any Osamas, or
Hitlers. If humanity could just swallow their collective pride and love one another as
Jesus taught, there would be an end to the b.s. that we experience on a daily basis.
Think about that. B.S. obliterated! We wouldn’t need to be concerned with feeding
the poor, they would be fed. Through glorifying Jesus Christ, we let His glory shine
through us. We need to be compassionate. We need to be merciful. We need to let
love rule, like Jesus taught.

God is love, He says so in the Bible, and with Him, we too can be love. Does this
mean that we should let our defenses down completely? Should we all give Osama a
great big hug when he is found? I don’t think so. Evil is evil. It needs to be dealt
with. But how do we deal with an act as heinous as 9/11 if we are supposed to be
love, as He was and is?

Corporal punishment? War? The Bible is full of examples of God using war, where He
had deemed it appropriate. Is it our decision to decide when and where war or murder
are appropriate? I don’t believe that it is, however God can use anything and
everything to correct injustice. War is not His only avenue.
The confusing aspect of this is that, as humans, we don’t know when He is at work.
We don’t know, conclusively, if what is happening is His work or not. It’s kind of
frustrating personally. I want to know when He is at work. It isn’t that I don’t trust
Him, it’s just exciting to feel His presence. I am becoming more in tune with Him
daily, and I am beginning to realize when He is at work more and more, but it’s still
frustrating. I want to know more of Him. If it was possible, I would want to know
everything! Of course, that’s not possible. I (as a finite human being) cannot know
everything of an infinite God.

I’m sure that I will spend the rest of my life seeking Him, learning more about Him and
His plan. Everyday I see Him, and what He has done and is doing. I can see Him in
the pages of a book, not just the Bible. I can see Him in a John Steinbeck novel. I can
see Him at work in an episode of “Lost.” I can see Him in a ray of sun peeking through
a storm cloud. I tell my daughter, Rachel that God is saying hello. You don’t have to
look very hard to see Him. The beautiful system He created is evidence of Him and His
love.

Even in His judgment, God shows His love. He may not be showing His love towards
those He is judging, but then again, He may be.
“Vengeance is Mine, sayeth the Lord.” That line brings me great comfort. Not that He
hasn’t poured out His wrath on me before, but I trust that now that I am trying to lead
a Christ centered life, I will avoid incurring much more of His wrath. His wrath is now

on my side! I don’t need to fight anymore. I now have the most powerful weapon in
the universe on my side. God fights for me!
I used to do a lot of bad stuff. Stupid stuff. Nothing major, I never shot or raped
anyone, but bad stuff none the less. It always seemed to come back to me, or should
I say, on me. I always thought that it was Karma, but now I understand that it was
Love.

It was His love showing me that what I was doing was wrong. I have a really thick
head and it took Him quite a while to get through to me. It took a long time, and me
suffering through a lot of b.s., for Him to get me to the point I am at now.
“Love your neighbor” isn’t crap, it’s pure genius! It doesn’t come with any
qualifications. It doesn’t say; if they’re Christians; if they’re straight; if they’re well
mannered; if they’re of the same socio-economic class as you; if they’re pretty; if
they’re not fat; if they have their life together; if they abstain from premarital sex; if
they’re smart; if they’re the same race as you; if, if, if… There is no, “if” in the
statement, “Love your neighbor.” That’s it. I think that that is the central theme to
true Christianity. I think it is also the central theme to all major world religions. But
most people who claim to believe in a god, be it Jesus, Buddha, Vishnu, Yahweh, Allah,
or Jah, don’t seem to get it.

I do believe that you must accept Christ in your heart to receive salvation, but if you
can’t, at least make your time on this big, beautiful rock worth it. Make it a better
world for everyone, regardless of who or what they are. Let’s destroy the atrocities
that occur on a daily basis. Let’s shine the Light for everyone. Let’s take action! Quit
waiting for everyone else to wake up… Wake them up!
Get out in the streets, lift up the ones who need it most. Give it away, that’s the
secret to life. Give everything you have to give. For Him. For your him. Destroy the
Enemy! Let’s kick the Darkness until it bleeds Daylight!

I believe that He is waking up a lot of people right now. I believe He is coming back,
and very soon. But He doesn’t want us to wait for Him, we must blaze the trail ahead
of Him.
