Do you ever feel you are being set upon by Satan or his demons? As we grow in our walk with the Lord we infringe on powers and principalities opposing the kingdom of God.  The more effective we are in the work the more we rile up the enemy.

Many years ago at night when I would let the dog out for the last time before bed I would be outside the back door standing on the porch waiting on him. When he would come in, before I went in, sometimes I would feel a presence. It would rush at me from the back of the yard out of the darkness. I would hurriedly get through the door and shut it. After doing this several times I thought how silly it was to believe this was going on. Then I realized there was more to it. I resolved to stand my ground the next time it happened and rebuke it in the name of the Lord. In 2 Timothy 1:7 we are told not to be fearful. Another night came and I let the dog out. As he came in I once again felt this rushing presence. I rebuked it in the name of the Lord Jesus and ordered it to be gone. After that I never felt this again. It was a spiritual attack. Some time later I mentioned the incident to my wife. She too had experienced this. I told her what I had done. Another night came. When she let the dog out she felt this presence rush up at her. She rebuked the presence in the name of the Lord. She did not experience it after that again. This seems very minor but the enemy will intimidate us whenever possible. I learned a valuable lesson. In James 4:7  we are told “Resist the devil and he will flee from you”.

Since this early incident there have been more. There have been times I have lain down to go to sleep and have closed my eyes and seen strange faces seemingly inches from my own. When I would open my eyes they would be gone only to return when I closed my eyes again. At times, even after calling on the Lord, they would continue. I would have to rebuke them strongly in the name of the Lord several times before I would be left alone. We are not without power and authority. In Romans 8: 15 we are told we have not received the spirit of bondage to fear; but we have received the Spirit of adoption, whereby we cry, Abba Father. I feel fortunate that I have not seen actual demons as some have seen. They are real. Thankfully we have the Lord as our shield, Ephesians 6: 16, “Above all, taking the shield of faith, wherewith you shall be able to quench all the fiery darts of the wicked.”  My wife and I have also experienced a cold come over us. It seems to have happened as we were going to bed. Even though we were in bed with the covers over us this terrible cold has overtaken us. It is very intense and we have shaken almost uncontrollably. It was extremely difficult to get warm even though there was no reason to be that cold. One night, when it happened, I turned the electric blanket way up and tried everything I could to get warm. Finally in desperation I cried out to the Lord for help. I realized where the cold was coming from. It was a spiritual attack. Upon crying out to the Lord the cold receded and I was fine. In talking about it to my wife she had done the same thing. Thankfully it has been some time now since it has happened to either of us.

There have been times when we have had strangers and unclean persons in our home. We have felt unwanted presences after they have left. We have rebuked them, praying to the Lord, to drive them out. Luke 10: 17 tells us how the apostles reported to the Lord Jesus” Even the devils are subject to us through your name”. There was an incident when we were visiting some friends in another state. They had had a woman and her son staying with them for a time. Our hosts had asked her to leave after she had abused her privilege to stay with them. She had been gone several weeks. We were given that spare room to sleep in . The first night we slept there I could not sleep and felt very uneasy. I knew that there was an unwanted presence in the room. I prayed for power from the Lord, “who works in us mightily”, Colossians 1: 29. I ordered any unclean spirit out of the room. Once that was done I immediately went to sleep. The next morning I mentioned to our host what I had experienced. She thought it was very interesting because she did not like to go into that room after the woman and her son left. She said she felt very uneasy in the room. We told her that we too had felt uneasy in the room. I told her that I had sat up in bed and in the name of the Lord, I had rebuked the unclean spirit. I ordered it to leave and not return. I told her if she too had a strong relationship with the Lord she could order unclean spirits out and they would have to obey. The three of us then prayed over the house and again ordered any unclean spirits out of the house. Once it was done she felt an oppressive weight lift from the house and no longer had a problem with going into the spare bedroom.

I understand these are not major things compared to what some have faced or do face. They are not major things in relation to what I believe we will come up against as this world grows darker. They are foundational principles though. They are good training for what is to come. We do fight against principalities and powers. Ephesians 6: 12 clearly tells us, ”For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, and against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places”. Jesus pronounces to us in Matthew 28: 18 “ All power is given unto me in heaven and in earth”. Through Him we also are given power and authority. In Luke 9: 1 the apostles are given power and authority over “all” devils, and to cure diseases. In Acts 1, when we receive the Holy spirit we receive power.

We are told In 1 Peter 5: 8  “your adversary the devil, as a roaring lion, walks about, seeking whom he may devour. Also we are told in verse 6 to humble ourselves under the mighty hand of God that He may exalt us in due time.

Verse 7 tells us to cast all of our cares on Him because He cares for us.

As a final reminder we must understand once again Luke 10: 17-20 “And the seventy returned again with joy, saying, Lord even the devils are subject unto us through your name. And He said to them, I beheld Satan as lightning fall from heaven. Behold, I give unto you power to tread on serpents and scorpions, and over all the power of the enemy: and nothing by any means hurt you. Notwithstanding in this rejoice not, that the spirits are subject to you; but rather rejoice, because your names are written in heaven.”
